I'd imagine we'd get Deveaux back as well but if we don't then yeah, getting a LB from the transfer portal would be necessary. Getting 5 Power 5 transfers doesn't seem like we'll lose out much on our H.S. recruits considering the guys we lose during the offseason. Hopefully, Hammock has the contacts to get these kinds of difference makers into our program.
My guess is Pugh is done and Deveaux will be back. Just getting one of them back will be huge as Cole is going to be a good one. Have those two and fill in with a transfer. Then we have somewhat of depth, with the young guys being back-ups, at the LB position and looking pretty good IMO.

I still prefer looking at the average recruit ranking, since the total points depends on the number of commits. All the MAC teams are close in the average, which supports the MAC teams have the same level of talent, assuming you put stock in these numbers. I'm not sure you can really make any judgment on Hammock recruiting other than perhaps saying he is on par with the other coaches in his first full recruiting class. Of course, the recruits having the physical skills is important. However, we all know that it is largely what the staff does with these recruits as well as the mental attitude and intangibles of the recruits that makes the real difference.
Edit: In our 2020 commits we have 6 commits in the top 22 of all time recruits, so that is impressive. One can go through that list and see many that never panned out at all or did not live up to the ranking. However, I would much rather have higher ranked recruits, of course still hoping for those diamonds in the rough.

You really do have to wait until the classes are finished. Because we have so many recruits already we are #72 by total class. But we are well over 100 by average recruit rating.
And the average recruit rating is the only one that means anything. If any of them mean anything.

Recruiting rankings, are meaningless to our school's success over the last 15 years ( this year has an asterisk)..as we need to " a lot time" and patience, which will bring us , to the next level.
Our recruiting rating, where positive, or negative, is totally meaningless, as a tool to evaluate our next few seasons.

Oh c'mon, that extra .0032 in the rating makes all the difference in the world!

He is a very likeable guy and should have very little trouble on the recruiting trail. I have faith in him. I am not too sure about his coaching staff, as they have shown very little this year. And since Hammock had to put this group together without any direct experience with them working in their current positions, who knows what the future holds for these guys. Hopefully, he'll hit the transfer and JUCO pools for some immediate help. If there's any improvement next year (and I'm sure there will be) - as long as the injuries are kept at a minimum - the Huskies should be on their way back.
When coach Novak was hired he told Cary Groth that if she hired him she would have to be patient because he would not go for the quick fix by recruiting Jucos and transfers. He wanted to build the program for long term success which to him meant recruiting HS kids and red shirting them. He told her the wins would not come for a few years after he was hired because he would be playing some kids that would not be competative for a couple of years.
I hope that Hammock does the same because unfortunately I think that we are in full rebuild mode. Perhaps the young kids that are getting four gsmes of live fire this year will develop quicker than they otherwise would. I hope that if we go for Jucos and transfers it is a very limited number where they can make a huge impact.
In addition to this, this years reminds me of the injury prone down year of 2007 when NIU went 2-10, also Novak's last year. He refused to burn a lot of red shirts even though the team could have used those players. It appears Hammock is doing the same thing.

You have to look at recruit ratings in terms of your school’s ability to attract players and not in terms of the individual athlete. So the reason we get so many kids right around .790 to .810 is that they have very few equal or better offers. A few top guys obviously do, but the majority of your class is here because it was us, BG, EMU or Cornell. A school like UCF who is around an .840 recruit average.....even their middle recruits have offers from Auburn, Clemson, Penn st., etc.
Any individual athletes rating is pretty shaky, but the class as a whole tells you what the HS football world thinks of your program.

2007 was a rough one, something to the effect of over 20 season ending injuries. We were down to our 4th (?) string walk-on QB, Ryan Morris, and had to convert a LB to play RB.

UCF is also in one of the top HS football states for recruiting. Playing in Orlando in a relatively new football stadium with 50k students is pretty appealing. Much better than playing in an old, cheaply built stadium in rainy/windy/cold DeKalb with a declining student population.
It has been four (?) years since Frazier announced the master facilities plan, why has there been no update on renovating Huskie Stadium?

BTW Snoopy, Novak did the program a huge favor by NOT burning redshirts that year. It helped setting up the 2010 & 2011 teams. Kill and others made that point as well.

Comparing UCF to NIU recruiting was OK when they were a fledgling D1 program. NIU has a ton to offer but UCF does too....just way different ...and warmer and with hotter chicks.

Went to the Vandy game and will say that the amount of construction on campus and around the city was impressive. I would think any new construction on campus would certainly be big for growing enrollment. Academic buildings, athletics, whatever. NIU needs to get a couple cranes on campus. Heck, even if they aren’t going to build anything maybe just rent a couple so visitors think there are big things happening.
