North Carolina has too many D1 programs. With most being small schools. Elon, High Point, Garner-Webb, etc should not be D1

Is this an embarrassment for a P5 school to lose to a D2 school for a National Championship? We have part time D1 schools. Would they get a special color for what sports they are in, and a color to show they are D1 champs in a sport?

There is no such thing as a part time D1 school. There are sports that are not divided into divisions, like Bowling.

There are schools that have one or two Division 1 teams. They exist primarily in hockey, lacrosse, and soccer with a few others like Dallas Baptist in baseball.

Several schools that are primarily in Division II field Division I wrestling programs: Bloomsburg, Clarion, Edinboro, & Lock Haven. Franklin & Marshall is DIII and fields a D1 wrestling program.

UC-San Diego have the most in D1. They have like 8.

I believe Western Washington is D1 for Women's rowing. Not many schools have that at D2 level.

RMAC schools are mainly alone that have LAX for both men and women.

Why do you continually post information that is FALSE?

UC-San Diego has ZERO Sports that compete at the Division I level.

They have three sports (Fencing, Men's and Women's Water Polo) that compete in NCAA sports that have no divisions.
Men's Volleyball from the NCAA is split between DIII and the NCAA. Again, it is not called the NCAA Division I championship.

Western Washington competed in the DII Rowing Championships, finishing 3rd in DIVISION II

It's called the National Collegiate Division (D-NC) for the sports of:
Women's Beach Volleyball, Women's Bowling, Co-ed Fencing, Men's Gymnastics, Women's Gymnastics, Women's Ice Hockey, Co-ed Rifle, Co-ed Skiing, Men's Volleyball, Men's Water Polo, and Women's Water Polo. Women's Ice Hockey and Men's Volleyball are split with a D-NC and D-III championship. Men's Ice Hockey is D-I and D-III and I'm guessing the reason it's not classified as D-NC is because the D-II Northeast-10 Conference sponsors the sport although there is no longer a D-II championship. All other sports have championships in each division.

There are only 11 teams from D-II schools competing in D-I and they are grandfathered in because of the 2011 decision.

Dallas Baptist — Baseball
New York Tech — Baseball
Lock Haven — Field Hockey
Augusta — Men's Golf
Francis Marion — Men's Golf
Augusta — Women's Golf
Bellarmine — Men's Lacrosse
Bloomsburg — Wrestling
Clarion — Wrestling
Edinboro — Wrestling
Lock Haven — Wrestling

Campbell, Elon, Gardner-Webb, and High Point need to drop down to D2. An argument could be made for Western and Asheville dropping down, as well.

The only program that isn't included on the map is Hawaii (Sorry, Rainbow Warriors!) due to their location. While I know there might be some programs that are slightly off in location, it was extremely tough to place everybody exactly without any guidelines. I did my best, so cut me some slack if something is a few miles off! 03-thumbsup

One thing that still stands out to me is how distance there is between programs once you get west of Texas and east of the West Coast. There are plenty of programs on the eastern seaboard, especially around New England and the Mid Atlantic, but when you look at states like Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and Nebraska, giant plots of land are without DI representation. It's wild to compare that to states like Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, New York, and Texas to see that giant contrast.

Anyways, enjoy!

NY has a larger population (19M vs. 11.7M), but they don't have the depth of FBS talent Ohio has.

Wow, New York has 2 in the entire state, 1 in a major conference. Add in New Jersey and it's 3/2. Crazy for a state that size.

Of states with at least one P5 school, the lowest percentages of P5 to total D-I are:

New York.........9.1% (1 of 11)
Ohio..............10.0% (1 of 10)
Louisiana........10.0% (1 of 10)
Maryland........16.7% (1 of 6)
Pennsylvania...18.2% (2 of 11)

Yep. California has 24 Division 1 schools, but only 7 of them play FBS football. 4 in the PAC and the other 3 in the MWC. It's amazing to me that the latter 3 aren't better with so many recruits in their back yard. Much smaller North Carolina now has 7 FBS schools!

That's because all those CA recruits are filling out the rosters of the rest of the schools in the PAC, plus some are going to other P5 conferences, all before they even look at the MWC schools. And when they do, I bet many of them are choosing Boise.

To put everything in one place, this is what I come up with for all the states (except Alaska), in order of the total number of D-I schools in each state.

State..............P5....G5....FCS....BB only...Total

Texas..............5......7.......8..........3.........23
California.........4......3.......4.........12........23
New York.........1......2.......8.........11........22
North Carolina..4......3.......7..........4.........18
Virginia............2.....1.......7..........5.........15
Pennsylvania....2......1.......8..........3.........14
Florida.............3......4......4...........2.........13
Ohio................1......7......2...........3.........13
Illinois.............2......1.......4..........6.........13
South Carolina..2......1......6...........3.........12
Louisiana.........1......4.......5...........1........11
Tennessee........2......2......5...........2.........11
Indiana............3......1......3...........3.........10
Alabama..........2......3.......4..........0..........9
Kentucky.........2.......1.......4..........1..........8
Maryland.........1.......1.......1..........5..........8
New Jersey......1.......0.......2..........5..........8
Mississippi.......2.......1.......4..........0..........7
Georgia...........2.......2......3...........0..........7
Michigan.........2........3......0..........2..........7
Connecticut.....0........1......3..........3..........7
Massachusetts..1.......1......2..........3..........7
Utah...............1........2......2..........1.........6
Arkansas.........1........1......2..........1.........5
Colorado..........1.......2......1..........1..........5

It's crazy to compare Minnesota (1) and Louisiana (11). One is geographically smaller, has a smaller population, is much poorer, and has less people who attend college and yet it has 11 Division 1 schools while the one who could afford it has only 1.
