RE: Keep him or ditch him?
Someone here has a great Stammers proclamation about the Mizzou game in 2009 in their sig. Classic.

He's just like that crazy drunk aunt no one wants to be around but you have to invite her to Christmas so she's not all alone over the holidays.

Dude wants to be “The Star of the Show” and consistently ruins every thread he posts in. It’s his MO and has been for years.
He’s the anti-any-GD-thing. If you say turn right he’ll say turn left. If you say stop he’ll say go. Up, down, inside, out, whatever, he’s the anti-everything. I cannot believe a fan of the program (as he says he is) can find little or no fault in the staff. They run it and I know what I see.
Sorry to bring this up at this time but IMHO it had to be said.

He's not a fan of the program. He's here to ruin this message board and that sucks for the rest of us.

If that's the case then why does he still post? AKA are there any mods here? I'd ban this guy from FB real quick if he acted like this on a normal basis.

He’s like the drunk aunt/uncle ToldYa spoke of. Hard to get rid of and places you in a damn if you do, or damn if you don’t situation.
BTW Stammers is very cordial in other forums. Acts civilized, so…

Had Cal taken over what Pastner did, it would not have taken him 5 years to get going, would have kept it going immediately. We can't keep gambling our program on someone who in 6 years hasn't really learned much, can we afford 6 more that he might break through?? People keep saying Florida and Michigan and Syracuse are all having down years, yes but their coaches have all PROVEN they can coach.
What was in place when Cal left?
If I recall, we were looking for walk-ons just to be able to hold a 5-on-5 practice.
Which is why I said previously that Cal did not build a program. He built a machine, but he took that machine with him.
Funny we seem to be still looking or walk-ons now.

He pulls the same crap over on MR just not to the same extent that he does here. It's who he is, unfortunately.

Keep him or ditch him?

It will be here if he is given time, but you know how it is, everybody wants it now, thats the nature of the game. It would be sad to dismiss him just as he gets ready to learn some valuable lessons and perhaps turn the corner for good. I don't know what to say or do if my opinion really counted, but I think devoid of a sure thing, I would ride the storm out. Experience is the best teacher.
If you are a coach that can "build a powerhouse", I don't think it takes you 6,7 years to learn the nuances of the game. Imo you either have it or you don't.

And think about that further for a minute. Read the articles about him. When he was what,9, he knew he wanted to be a basketball coach. He applied for the Clippers head coaching job as a teenager. He's been preparing his whole life to be a head coach. Then he gets there and seem totally unprepared on how to be a head coach.
That in itself tells you he's more fluff than substance. Applying for the clippers job at 19 was a gimmick, and how many gimmicks have we seen in his tenure here?
He's a quality assistant who will work tirelessly on behalf of a head coach and a program. He could be a decent coach at a mid major program
Unfortunately he's turning Memphis into that mid major program.

It provides information information for discussion.
You're either the AD or one of the big $$ boosters. You are tired of being a doormat. You want to move to the next level. But the names you want aren't interested. Now you have to find someone to hire -- anyone.
You take a chance on a 33-year-old coach who has 5 years D1A head coaching experience. His record over those 5 years is 73–59 (.553) with just one NIT appearance, not a win, just an appearance.
His first season he gets you to the 3rd round of the NIT but follows it up with back-to-back 17-loss seasons with no post-season appearances. And that 3rd season ended with a 43-point loss in your conference tourney.
His first three seasons as your head coach he puts up a record of 38-47 (.447).
This brings his record after eight seasons as a D1A head coach to 111-106 (.512).
Everyone's calling for his head from students, to casual fans, and most importantly the big $ boosters. Eight years of mediocrity including three years of failure as your coach will definitely get the fan base rumbling.
The AD shut down all speculation by granting a 5-year extension. He took some serious heat for that.
But now everybody's happy. Heck, 11 Final Fours and four national championships would make most fan bases happy.
His record over those first eight seasons of his head coaching career is why you don't see Krzyzewski's name in those Top 10 by Wins lists in the Tracking Pastner thread.
Yea BUT.....The basketball world didn't know who or where Duke was, U of M just came out of a 5 year run of great basketball when JP was hired. Not a good comparison at all. We deserve better and it starts at the top of the food chain. We could not give the job away after Cal left and that should tell us, there was no plan, there was no strategy, they were fooled then and they are fools now. Very similar to UT and Fulmer and the years after....it's called pissed poor leadership and it starts at the top. JP a HOF candidate someday? He's a poor recruiter, poor at strategy, his press conferences are terrible, he is not respected by the players or the fans...Myabe the HOP of bad hires.

Our football program has more AAC title trophies than our basketbal program. And it will probably be that way for a long time, UNLESS...
