8/10 recruits are from a JuCO/Community College. 2 transfers from other D1 programs. No high school recruits. Oof.

Who decided to stay, who left via portal? With 10 coming in, not much room for holdovers.

RE: Women's Basketball Recruiting 2022 & 2023
Had a random thought, would it not be easier to relegate the women's program if there was significant investment into a collective on behalf of the women? We were among the first, if not the fist to offer scholarships to women. Why not offer some.kicl ass NIL money to the.women. it would also keep us in title IX compliance as money on the men's side begins to skew the equation.

NIL money does not come from the school so I don't know how they could possibly require the money between the men and women to be even.

That and Title 9 doesn’t force schools to spend evenly between the sexes. It requires they give an equal proportion of athletic scholarships based on the ratio of the student body.

Just read and article that says there may be schools running afoul of title IX because of the guys are getting a disproportionate amount of NIL money. And that there may be legal action soon.

NIL money is given by third parties, not institutions. So I think you need the university to be involved in identifying who the collective should and should not be pay for it to violate title 9, since that would produce an unequal opportunity.

I don't see how the NCAA can do anything about private individuals giving money to athletes now that they've opened that box to make it legal. Theres no way they can tell Joe Millionaire that he can only give $250k to a QB if he gives the same amount to a female athlete too.

BigBlueMonarch isn't wrong that there are title 9 issues with NIL. For example, a lot of the well funded/power programs are hiring marketing/sales people and advisors to their staff to land their athletes deals. If a school hired a staff for the men's programs, they need to hire an equal amount of staff for the women's programs. But these are easy to avoid issues. Just make the staff for all sports, give all athletes equal access to the staff and create plausible deniability.

That makes sense. If the school itself is involved, I can see how Title IV comes into play on the school side. But not the donor side.

Exactly. And there being title 9 issues at play still doesn't help with BigBlueMonarchs initial point that we can use NIL to become a women's bball power once again. It would require a lot more cash than our fans/corporate partners are willing to give. We aren't going to suddenly outspend the LSUs, Texas', South Carolina's and UConn's of the world on women's hoops just because there is a new way to spend money.

Correct. LSU WBB currently has more NIL deals than ODU has in their entire department. I'm sorry to say this, but ODU WBB will NEVER get back to where they were in the 80s/90s. No President, AD, head coach can make that happen for ODU's level. The best ODU can achieve is a head coach who can rise the program, get to a couple NCAA tourneys and make a run. Then they will take a larger school job, and most likely the higher-rated recruits they had to get to that status, will transfer up because of NIL deals. As much as I hate the transfer portal in its destruction of long-term rosters, I cannot deny a WBB student-athlete taking a lucrative $$ opportunity.
Should ODU be competing with the JMUs/Libertys/etc.? Yes. Should ODU be competing to get into the NCAA tourney every 4-5 years? Yes. However, the idea of becoming competitive again vs. the SEC/ACCs of the world is not possible in the current landscape.

I can see this perspective. Its probably a bit unrealistic to expect us to compete for national championships any more. Im glad I got to experience that. The P5 advantages monetarily are just too much in these days of NIL and opulent facilities. However, I do expect the Lady Monarchs to be in the top 5 or 10 of non P5 schools regularly and we aren't even close to that. For a program with our history, that's simply unacceptable.

If you are recruiting a 17-18-19-year old kid what happened 25 years ago really doesn't matter to her, does it? According to Wikipedia, ODU hasn't been to an NCAA tournament since 2008 and the tournament record is 5-8, with 5 losses in the first round. Hardly enticing to the type of player who would get us into the top 5 or 10 non P5. But keep dreaming.

Don’t think you can build a program around Juco recruits and portal transfers (many of whom stay only 1 year). Juco players are not at 4-year schools for a reason — they weren’t good enough to draw attention from the 4-year schools. Plus, we aren’t getting portal transfers from elite programs. I know it’s difficult to recruit high-end HS players, but I’d rather see kids come in and stay for a while, rather portal kids come in for 1 year and then transfer out.

Or their grades didn’t allow them to get a four school. Jerry Tarkanian did a great job gleaning JuCo at Long Beach State and UNLV.
Oh and at least 3 JuCos have gone on and won the Heisman Award.
Stop the hate and elite-ism.

Appears ODU just landed a commitment from Hama'ya Fielder, a Juco from Philadelphia, MS, who looks good from the 3-point line, at least based on the few video clips at the HUDL link below. A real nice addition if she can clip the 3-point shot around 35%+
https://www.hudl.com/profile/12001334/Hamaya-Fielder
Question to Moderators: Could you please change the Title of this thread to also include 2024 Recruits, say "Women's Basketball Recruiting 2022 thru' 2024", and if not, maybe create a new one for 2024 and move posts related to 2024 recruits over to the new thread?
