RE: 2022 Transfer Portal Thread
Luther was a PWO stuck behind one of the best kickers in program history
Brooks could never really break into the rotation - we were his only FBS offer
William Racely is listed on 247 - didnt play any games last year
Brown jr couldnt get on the field in 3 seasons
Paul will be missed - but we have depth at DB

Wow, 4 guys in a single day. I wish these guys well but from a program perspective, none of these players had any statistics that we need to backfill. My guess is that these guys were over-recruited and would be better at an FCS school.

Another way to look at this......I really think that the guys leaving is the result of better recruiting we have had the last few yrs. What I mean is that I think we are getting better players and the fringe guys are realizing they are better at an FCS. I don't think we have had a single guy transfer out to a P5 school. Only G5, D2 or FCS.

I assume this means four more scholarships open up for 2022/3.

I assume this means four more scholarships open up for 2022/3.

From an NCAA page about general transfer rules (https://www.ncaa.org/news/2019/8/20/what...sfers.aspx)

"Student-athletes who leave their current school academically eligible may receive an athletics scholarship at the new school, regardless of whether they will be eligible to compete in their first year at the new school. Once a student-athlete informs a school of the intent to transfer, the school can cancel the student’s athletics scholarship at the conclusion of that term. The NCAA requires member schools to have a clearly communicated transfer policy that describes how exploring transfer options impacts access to services and benefits."

I bolded the part that raises a question for me. Am I reading this correctly, in that these transfers who enrolled for the current school term and attended classes for the first few days of the term before formally declaring their intent to transfer, are now entitled to receive the balance of their scholarship for this term, even though they will no longer be part of the team? As I read this, if they do not get picked up right away, it appears EMU has to cover their tuition for the rest of the current term.

RE: 2022 Transfer Portal Thread
Hamze El Zayat Kline and Sparario have been added to the roster. Powell has not nor any of the high school players we added in December. It concerns me that Powell may not be playing spring ball. Scholarships continue to be tight. Expect more roster movement AND it will be interesting who we sign in Feb.

Good quote and esp. the bolded.

What I think is happening, based on what I know how scholarships are given out is that those who wish to transfer at MID-YEAR gave notice early. Not nefarious like they quit on the team, but because they had to let the world know they are eligible to sign with a new school in December, if that school has an UNUSED scholarship to offer.

The rest, as you indicate, can begin their 2nd semester and stay on athletic scholarship as is their right.

So long as the player met his athletic obligation for the season (i.e., the football season which is from summer drills to a bowl game) he should be able to remain a student athlete at the school for second semester. It is NOT like being an hourly employee. No work, no eat. It is more like a teacher who may work say 10 months but receives compensation over 12 months. Doesn't have to work summer to get paid what was earned during the regular school year.

Just to go geeky... What if a player plays in a bowl game after 1st semester ends, can he transfer to his new school and get an unused 2021/2 scholarship? Does he actually participate as a student-athlete beyond fall semester?

Or in other words, did those AL and Ga. players participate in the CFP game as 2nd semester players at their respective schools? If one of those players wanted to transfer to EMU and do spring ball, would they be participating in athletes at TWO schools during the same semester???

According to 247, Rico Small has entered the transfer portal. Came in as a 3-star receiver in the class of 2020, and I believe they moved him to DB this past season. I don't think he played much (if ever) in his two years here.

I'll be curious to run the breakdown of how many guys leaving EMU end up at the following....
1. not picked up
2. FCS
3. Div II
4. G5
5. P5

My guess is a lot of FCS.....

You are most certainly correct Steve, your post is dead-on! Nevertheless, that would suggest that our recruiting is sub-standard, as we just are not getting MAC quality athletes.

I'd like to go a step further and compare those numbers for EMU with other MAC schools.

Every team experiences this. For each recruit that doesn't fit at their recruited level there are multiple kids that are good fits.

Agree. And in a merit based system, there will always be players who don't make the 2-deeps, simply because of numbers (there are more than 2 QBs, more than 2 TEs, 2 centers, etc.).

It is a problem at EMU. It is a problem at Alabama.

like i said - i think wed need to see comparisons with EMU to other MAC schools to say if it affects us a lot of a little

EMU has 9 players leaving in the portal (as of today)
Akron has 10
Ball state has 4
BGSU has 9
Buffalo has 20
CMU has 12
Kent has 2
Miami has 9
NIU has 3
Ohio has 9
Toledo has 11
and Western has 7

we're average for the MAC

that isnt great - but he would be a grad transfer.

maybe he smells the NFL and wants a bigger stage? maybe he wants a masters that EMU can't offer?

only other kicker on the roster is Jesus Gomez
