I don’t have a subscription, but it appears that Goricki is suggesting Stan Heath could be the next guy. He was just named coach of the year in the G-League yesterday.

Bob W and I were talking about Health.

I like him -- a lot.

I think he deserves serious consideration. Solid resume.

I'm driving and stopped at traffic light, so I didn't have time to look this up! Was Rob Murphy on Stan Heath's staff at Kent St in the early 2000's, when Kent St was dominant in the MAC? I thought Heath was the Kent St coach? Thanks everyone!

Yes he was. Murphy was a first-year assistant.

There were 3 really, really good Detroit PSL high school coaches back then. Stan Heath, Rob Murphy and one more whose name I can't remember.

Those were the glory days of the Detroit PSL before things went down hill.

BTW, I still say we have to remember that Scott was an assoc or asst AD at E. Carolina (AAC) or Miss. State (SEC). Even though some may wonder about the fit, I mean geographical fit, Scott may know some up and coming coaches from those two conferences.

AAC includes schools like Cincy, Temple, Wichita State, UCF, Memphis, Houston, etc. It pretty well cover 1/2 of the U.S., including both side of the Mississippi.

David Goricki's article is primary discussing those with Michigan ties.

Question how much does Heath make as a G league head coach?
What is his overall college coaching record?
What his recruiting rep especially in Michigan?

I'll let you decide for yourself.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Heath

That said I'd like to add a comment and a question:

1). He has not coached in the Midwest for about 20 years. A minus?

2). If he wants to come back to the Midwest, there is a job opening as HC of the Motor City Cruise.

Thanks I am warming up to Heath that is if he wants to come back to the Midwest and leave Florida. Solid resume but can we afford to pay him? He also been there and done that as,a college coach. Maybe he prefers the,NBA at this point.

I have seen Charles Thomas' name in print (Detroit News).

Will check on Haynes.

Saddi Washington is a real wild card. Yes, he has a big salary BUT as folks here have acknowledged Ypsilanti is close to Ann Arbor 03-lmfao and if you have "MAC in your blood" then coaching at EMU and not moving from Washtenaw Co. a good thing. (If I were to live again in MI, it would be Washtenaw Co. Great place to live and work).

Even though Saddi is a WMU alum, I would think the Washtenaw County thing could be important. His best bets were WMU (turned down) and possibly now EMU.

Why would he want to coach at a school like NIU??? If he wants to be a MAC HC the most logical choices were/are WMU and EMU.

Maybe EMU offers a slightly lower salary but has some generous incentives which can really bring the value of the package up. These have win-win possibilities.

(If I were writing an EMU contract: win the MAC West - 15K. Win the MAC tourney 25K extra. Win a NCAA tourney game another 25K. Etc.).

The idea, of course, is to do what Braun did and say pick up $75K in bonus money for making and winning a NCAA tourney game.

Let's really try to get a good E man in here. Think of MAC basketball as Minor League baseball and the Big 10 as MLB. The MAC has to get creative, borderline gimmicky to attract interest and give the fans a fun experience. If the hire (Boykins) fails, it's not the end of the world, the stakes are low, you try again. If it hits, you got something special for a lot of people. Low to no risk, high reward.

No search firm. Of course. : /
Haynes and Saddi are both Beilein guys, and either would be excellent.
Thomas is the guy that concerns me.

Agreed on Saddi. You have to make a legitimate attempt/offer. We have a couple good things going for us.

Another underrated aspect of him staying put last year is that he may not have wanted to move his family in the middle of the height of the pandemic. His thinking may be different now, particularly since he wouldn’t have to move at all.

Haynes is definitely an intriguing name. He knows the MAC well, has Detroit roots, and I'm guessing he has big time recruiting experience from Michigan and Maryland.

I'd like to see him interviewed.

Haynes was a beast at Kent St. i have no idea how good of a coach he is, but i remember him being a terror on defense.

I know other candidates will emerge but my bets would be either Washington or Haynes
Either one would make me happy

Both have excellent resumes. BobW will fault that neither wore the Green and White (or gray or black) of EMU.

I too would be 100% with a native Michigander with experience (and a degree) in the MAC who has coach at the highest levels (B1G).

Having played and coached in the MAC (HL for Saddi) is huge.

Both should be very good recruiters.

If they want to be head coaches, sign on the dotted line..........................

I would prefer these guys over say an asst coach from the SEC, Big East, ACC, etc.
