NO, Cincy needs to get the access game, and neither school has a 20% chance of making playoffs, even with a win over the other one.

This is exactly why you play the game now. The CFP committee won't rematch BYU and Cincinnati in an NY6 bowl if they've already played in early December.
Coastal Carolina, Louisiana, or Marshall are not going to jump Cincinnati, even if the Bearcats were to lose to BYU. Tulsa might even jump those three with a win over Cincinnati.
With a win, Cincinnati positions itself for serious consideration for that fourth CFP spot.

There is no room for BYU in NY6. Nor do they have the schedule that would give them a top 10 ranking to get there for serious consideration FBS opponents are 29-34, no p5 games and your best win by record is 6-4 UTSA.
Play offs: Alabama, Clemson, Ohio St. Oregon (could be ND)
Cotton: Oklahoma/Texas AnM (1 loss)
Orange: Florida (SEC runner up)/Miami (1 loss)
Fiesta: ND (1 loss)/USC (1 loss)
Peach: Georgia (2 loss)/Cincy (G5 auto)
Two loss SEC teams are regularly ranked ahead of G5 champs who qualify even when undefeated. All of those teams came with at least one P5 game and win. BYU has zero p5 games.

BYU has the inside track over PAC 12 #2 and SEC #4.
2-loss Georgia has nothing with which to pad their resume. SC (2-6) and Vandy (0-7) down the stretch. Georgia's wins over Arkansas (3-5), Tennessee (2-5), and Kentucky (3-5) have lost their luster. The win over Auburn (5-2) looks solid now, but Auburn will quickly fall from the rankings after losing to Alabama and A&M over the next 2 weeks.
All three of USC's opponents are winless. 1-loss USC would have to jump not just BYU, but also the Big 12 frontrunners and the Big Ten second tier....with a schedule of Colorado (2-0), Wazzu (1-1), and UCLA (1-2)...(don't be surprised if USC drops one of those games). And, 1-loss USC would somehow need to stay ahead after a loss to Oregon or UW.
1-loss Miami's last three games were barely surviving against Virginia Tech (4-4), NC State (6-3) and Virginia (4-4). May be COVID will save Miami from having to also survive Wake (4-3) and UNC (6-2). Miami's best NY6 pathway is for both Clemson and Notre Dame to reach the CFP...I'm just not sure the CFP wants to go there. So, Notre Dame or Clemson will take the Orange Bowl slot.
BYU's best win is over 4-1 Boise State on the road, not UTSA. Don't be surprised if that's a CFP Top-25 win by 12/20 (better than any USC, Miami or Georgia win). BYU's road win over 3-3 Houston is better than the UTSA win. Toss up between UTSA (6-4) and LA Tech (4-3) for the third best win...UTSA beat LA Tech by one in San Antonio.

Just no lol
You are counting chickens before they hatch. You have no idea what Boise will do and your best win is a 6 win team. You haven't played another team that has won that many games. In fact only three teams you have played have winning records and your FBS opponents combined record is 29-34.
We have seen how this works. USC will be in front of you with one loss we have 2017 as an example using UCF with p5 wins as your stand in. USC will also be in front of a 3 loss runner up Big 12 team.
Georgia with two losses would also be ranked in front of you just as a three loss Auburn was #7 when they played an undefeated #12 UCF.
The committee views any p5 win as better than a g5 win regardless of record. You have zero p5 games, sorry bud no NY6 for you guys.

RE: Should UC & BYU schedule a December game to boost winner's resume if both undefeated?
2017 final (before bowls) CFP ranking:
# Logo Team Record
1 Clemson University 12-1
2 University of Oklahoma 12-1
3 University of Georgia 12-1
4 University of Alabama 11-1
5 Ohio State University 11-2
6 University of Wisconsin 12-1
7 Auburn University 10-3
8 University of Southern California 11-2
9 Penn State University 10-2
10 University of Miami 10-2
11 University of Washington 10-2
12 University of Central Florida 12-0
13 Stanford University 9-4
14 University of Notre Dame 9-3
15 Texas Christian University 10-3
16 Michigan State University 9-3
17 Louisiana State University 9-3
18 Washington State University 9-3
19 Oklahoma State University 9-3
20 University of Memphis 10-2
21 Northwestern University 9-3
22 Virginia Tech 9-3
23 Mississippi State University 8-4
24 North Carolina State University 8-4
25 Boise State University 10-3
That UCF team had a game with Georgia Tech cancelled because of a Hurricane, wins over a ranked USF and twice over Memphis. Notice two loss USC, Washington, Penn St, and Miami are all ranked ahead of undefeated UCF with top 25 wins and a p5 win, neither of which BYU will have and your schedule overall is much weaker.

Who does it benefit?
If Cincy is still outside the CFP top 4 I don't exactly see how it hurts them, even if they were to lose. It's not like BYU belongs to a conference and can steal the access bowl slot, and I don't think a loss to an undefeated top 10 team would drop Cincy behind Marshall or Coastal or whomever winds up in the running
But if that top 4 is set do you really think a UC win over BYU would matter. (It wouldn’t)
Either play them in the regular season and give yourself a shot at making the playoffs or play them in a NY6 bowl. What would you rather have?
I look at UC's schedule vs BYU. UC has a path, although non-existent, compared to BYU,s non-existent unless they play UC. I say no.

I think UC’s path requires some help, but it’s far from nonexistent.
Obviously they have to win out.
1. Alabama wins out. This results in Florida being knocked out w/2 losses
2. Notre Dame loses prior to CCG, or they beat Clemson resulting in either ND or Clemson being knocked out w/2 losses
3. B10 champ wins out resulting in at least 1 loss for all other B10 teams
The above would give them a legitimate shot at the 4th seed. Just to be certain they could use the following as well.
4. Texas A&M loses to Auburn
5. Pac12 champ has 1 loss
That’s much more than a nonexistent path IMO.

Yup.
It's a rigged game. Under the CFP, it always has been. A g5 program will NEVER have a seat at that table.
Not to mention the almost inexplicable hatred of UC by ESPN. As far back as the 2010 Sugar Bowl, I have never understood why ESPN routinely neglects (on a good day) or actively trashes UC. What could be spun as a plucky "underdog" story always gets a hostile treatment whenever UC presents an actual challenge.
UCF got some of the same treatment, but also got/gets a fair amount of sympathy on individual stories.
In the end, I predict UC...if unbeaten...will finish at #9 in the CFP rankings, and BYU at 10. Playing each other helps neither school.

Rumor has it UC and BYU have at least connected on the subject. Discuss viability, etc. I expect no one wants to make much of a move until after tonight.

It goes back further than that. There has been a long standing bias against the urban publics named after a city with roots in the Metro Conference, particularly UC, Louisville, Memphis and Houston. Other urban publics that are not in the protected class such as San Diego State, Boise, Charlotte, Georgia State, Buffalo, etc. don't have the same sort of negativity thrown their way. Maybe its because those schools have not been the long standing threat in football and basketball that the former group has been. IDK.. .but its real IMHO.

Call me cynical, but I don't trust those guys. Read the forums on this message boards and you'll see those SBC, CUSA and MWC guys hate us just as much as P5 schools do. Also, speaking as someone that lives in Ohio, the MAC is in bed with the B10. I would not be surprised if the SBC has a similar arrangement with the SEC.
