My kid's high school ripped off "on Wisconsin". "Onward Vikings, onward Vikings, onward vikings on..... word vikings on, word vikings on, word vikings on word.... Vikings onward, vikings onward vikings on word vi.... kings onward vi kings, onward vi kings .. on... word.... VI!"
Now that's a song...
In the NCAA? It's gotta be Notre Dame. The song with lyrics is frigging badass.
It's one of the only fight songs that I hear commentators mention the lyrics to during games. "Shake down the thunder from the sky!"
Whenever ND is in national contention again, you'll hear the commentators saying that ND is "waking up the echo's". I like how it speaks to history and has this ethereal quality that makes it seem like there's an army of Knute Rockne's old teams watching from the heavens. Also, the fact that the chorus is just a simple Tuba humming away is awesome it leaves the lyrics to actually be heard (if sung). It's an actual "chorus".
Comments on the AAC schools:
Navy's is going to be a defacto AAC #1. Everyone knows "anchors aweigh".
Temple: Good tune and lyrics, but too short.
Houston: Talks about being down which is not my favorite thing in a fight song. Good Music though. Drums get lost.
SMU: Decent Tune. Appropriate Lyrics. A bit generic.
ECU: More unique than others. Like the inclusion of the call and response.
UCF: Neat Drums. Generic Lyrics. Too many different rifs. Cool but not something I'd remember after a listen or two.
USF: Might get my vote for #2. Good Tune. Cool Drums. Lyrics are good with a call and response.
Memphis: Memorable but it sounds like it was trying to go the SEC route of loud and slow (comparatively). Not a fan. It actually annoys me.
Tulane: Not bad, but the orchestration on the version I heard was sparse. It's not driving rhythmically enough for me.
Tulsa: One of my favorites simply because of the catchy melody and the driving drums. Lyrics are generic "march down the field" kind of stuff from the 40's so I'll dock points based on that.
Bonus Round:
Best fictional fight song?

One of the guys in our dorm transferred from Wisky and he was in the Band there. He would March in the hallway singing that damn song with a Wisconsin hat on. Pretty funny actually.

I actually typed out the words as we sang them in our family (I had 3 graduate from Fayette Academy in Somerville TN), because I always thought it was funny (we all did, really) how the kids never bothered to learn the actual words to the song. It was like... If you're not going to go to the trouble to write your own song, we're not going to go through the trouble of learning your jacked-up lyrics.
Best in the AAC: East Carolina
Best in the country: Tennessee is high, but Rocky Top isn't their fight song, so I have to keep reminding myself of that. I dig the Auburn fight song. Michigan State and Florida State as well.
