He had average results at WVU. WVU might be the toughest job in the p5 though. I can understand why Houston made the hire but you're right, I wouldn't have shelled out that much unless I knew it was a sure thing. Only time will tell if he's worth the money.
I wouldn’t call WV the toughest job in the P5 at all. That definitely goes to Washington State, Oregon State, Rutgers, Kansas, BC, Iowa State, etc.
Vandy....hands down.

Vandy for competition but being in TN helps to recruit.
I'd say Kansas. It's a basketball school in a basketball state and it's in a conference with as much tough competition as anyone outside the SEC.

It's Vandy. Kansas has an Orange Bowl win back in 2008 and has three conference titles since WWII. Vandy can't sniff that.

Yeah I forgot about Vanderbilt tbh, would’ve included them if I had remembered.

Vandy has a much easier recruiting ground. Vandy's problem is that they haven't had any good coaches.

You can have the best recruiting ground in the nation but if you can't touch the talent it doesn't matter - see Rice.
And Kansas State has the same recruiting ground as Kansas and yet they find a way to win. Heck, Oklahoma's in-state recruting talent isn't great but they find a way to take all of Texas's talent out of it.
It's Vandy. Based on comparing their budget, facilities, entrance requirements, and their history to their day-in-day-out competition, i.e. the SEC, Vandy is dead last.

Wazzu is a significantly worse job than Vandy. Like it's a different planet worse.

Academics make Vanderbilt the more difficult.

Academics and conference are both major pluses and minuses, but I think they absolutely balance out positively especially when you factor in Nashville versus the Palouse.

Both Academics and the Conference makes Vandy worse. And budget. And facilities.
If college town was that big of deal Vandy would be higher and OU and A&M would be lower.

RE: Ranking the AAC coaches
As a Vanderbilt fan living in Nashville, I'll weigh in.
Yes, the VU football job is a tough one. Lots of challenges and even negatives.
But for quality of life for your family (let's be blunt, most DI football head coaches have wives and kids), Nashville is a wonderful place to be. Top-notch private schools if you so choose, lots of cultural attractions, four seasons and beautiful hills, nice shopping and restaurants. Derek Mason's family is very happy here from what I understand.
Another wildcard factor: Vanderbilt is now home to more than one-third students of color. The football program has a surprisingly large Black fan base, with the athletics department now overseen by Candice Lee, an African-American woman.
So if you look beyond the typical "facilities, tradition and conventional fan base metrics" to which most fans somewhat lazily default for this topic and if you, instead, consider the future when college football will offer vastly more head coaches of color than is the case now — and consider that living in a city instead of a small college town in the middle of nowhere might become more and more attractive for many coaches ... Vanderbilt/Nashville is actually not a bad place to be now (or in the future) for a head coach, regardless of race.
