The photo at the top of that page illustrates why schools are more careful with football than some of the Olympics sports.
I'm not arguing the fairness of it nor am I dismissing the disappointment of lacrosse, etc., players. But the sport that brings home the bacon will be less likely to get gouged.

Between players and staff they're renting ~50 hotel rooms per game assuming 2 players per room. 50 hotel rooms x 6 home games x $120 per room=36k in savings. That's a bigger cost cutting move than the MAC eliminating the MAC basketball play-in games.

So you're saying this was a 'necessary' expense to begin with? That this will greatly impact 'competitive edge' -
I'm saying this was an unnecessary expense from the get-go. I'm sure the baseball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, field hockey and so on teams got the same thing???
There is no true team sacrifice in this. Only micro-managing small minded FB coaches freak out over this. It's not a real loss or sacrifice. It was a gravy expense.
Did women's softball, women's/men's basketball get free hotel stays before every home game.
Does cutting travel squads down to 45 or 50 really impact these teams? Check the participation charts from some of these games -- rarely more than 35 or so players play at all.
This is not about 'picking' on football. These commis/ADs/Pres are quick to offer the shell game that FB supports all these other sports. But all of a sudden when these other sports truly need some support, FB is the sacred cow.

I'd argue the play-in basketball games was an unnecessary expense as well.
Football supports the athletic department at P5 programs. Football really only supports itself at the G5 level. G5 programs don't bring in the same kind of revenue that the P5 programs do. If Lacrosse and Field Hockey had 5k-10k+ fans showing up to games, they'd be 'protected' too.
The reality of the situation is nobody is protected. Every sport, including football, is going to get hit with budget cuts.

Football doesn't really support itself either for most Go5 schools (maybe Boise State and a handful of others) ... all sports tend to be subsidized to one degree or another.
But they are not subsidized to make college sports fans happy. They are subsidized because they are viewed (rightly or wrongly) as a marketing spend by the University without which they will have lower application rates from certain segments of high school graduates and lower enrollment rates among those accepted.
And it wouldn't be unreasonable to view the marketing value as 60%-75% FB, 20%-35% BBall and 5% everything else.
So someone who is a fan of a different college sport can easily have a chip on their shoulder ABOUT FB, whinging about why FB gets extra privileges is a claim that "it's not fair."
When the reality is that FB delivers more of the marketing value that is justifying (rightly or wrongly) the subsidies that the Go5 Universities make of college athletics, and many of those other sports only get subsidized at all because the rules of the NCAA says that you have to have a broad based varsity athletics program to qualify as a Division 1 program, even more to qualify as a Division 1 Bowl Subdivision program.

RE: What about football???
Football is where it's at for college sports. Basketball is 2nd and everything else is a distant 10th.

depends on the school. there are places where track (oregon) baseball (long beach st) volleyball (nebraska, hawai'i) wresting (iowa) hockey (minn-duluth, miami) etc, lacrosse (maryland)... are quite important. in general, football 1, basketball 2, everything else down the line is fairly accurate but there's plenty of alternate realities around the ncaa. certainly, in the midwest football tends to be #1, but it's not always so.
the other reason athletics isn't expected to pay for itself is it is considered a part of the overall student experience. football games, homecoming, rivalry games, all contribute to student life and are thus funded by student fees to a degree. this is how it was for a long time, outside of a handful of big football programs that turned a modest profit (and now with major tv money make a lot more).
