RE: 2020 Football Season Predictions
(05-07-2020 04:05 AM)jedclampett Wrote: Sounds like the predictions are that there will be a bunch of 8-4 teams, a few teams with maybe 5 to 7 wins, and perhaps a couple with less than 5 wins.
For that to happen, there would be a remarkable amount of parity.
If the top teams in conference only have 8 wins, then there won't be a single AAC team in the top 25.
Prior experience would suggest that there will actually be a couple of teams with at least 9-10+ wins, a couple with 8+ wins and 2-3 other bowl eligible teams.
.
A couple of Temple FB fans on this message board have predicted that Temple might be able to win 8 games. I wish that I could agree. Six wins sounds more realistic to me.
Last season, six of Temple's eight wins came against teams with losing records (Bucknell, GT, ECU, USF, UConn & Tulane (5-6 against FBS teams). The Owls only had two quality wins last season, both of which were home games; the average margin of victory in those 2 games was only 2 points.
Despite winning 8 games, including 6 games vs. teams with losing records, and despite playing 7 home games last season, Temple only out-scored their opponents by an average of 0.39 ppg:
Temple's ppg: 26.31
Opponent's ppg: 25.92
Temple was outscored by an average of 18+ ppg vs. opponents with winning records:
Temple's ppg: 20.00
Opponent's ppg: 38.29
Temple's losses:
Buffalo 38, Temple 22
SMU 54, Temple 21
UCF 63, Temple 21
Cincy 15, Temple 13
North Carolina 55, Temple 13
Temple only managed to score more than 30 points in two games last year, one of which came vs. FCS (3-8) Bucknell, and the other one of which came vs. (2-10) UConn. Both of those were Temple home games.
=======================
Unfortunately for Temple, the performance of their offensive unit last season was highly similar to the performances of their offensive coordinator's prior team (NIU) the previous two seasons. In none of the past three seasons has Uremovich finished the season with an offensive unit ranked above #90 in the nation.
I would have to agree. Unless Temple gets a new offensive coordinator or a dynamic QB, I don't see them being anymore than a "grind it out" type of team. Cincinnati has some of the same problems, but they have been recruiting at a really high level, so they have been able to out-talent some mediocre teams that Temple is more likely to struggle with.

Troll. But I'll bite since you come off so prickish. What exactly did he say that was false? He said how terrible Montgomery left us, said we'll continue our slow uptick and gave reference to two players that are not only the best on our team but two of the better players at their position in the conference. If you want to make an argument about Holton that's fine as most QB's coming from behind constantly are going to have good numbers but CJ Johnson is a legit WR. Put up almost 400 yards against the two best teams in the East as a true freshman.
There was a pretty good span there, similar to what ECU is going through, where Memphis was a bottom feeder in CUSA so don't be so fast to trash others when you've been in the same place in a much worse conference.
Not many on this board will admit it but a good ECU football program is a boost to this conference. Maybe we'll be there in another year or two, Houston and Co. are building a good foundation.
I really like the direction ECU is heading in. You guys went out and got a real coach -- a guy who obviously knows how to win. It will pay off soon.

Living in North Carolina now for over 16 years I am well aware of the passion of ECU football fans. I'm surprised that ECU hasn't had more overall success since joining the American. I agree they appear to be heading in the right direction and that is good for our conference.

Hell, I'll admit it. This conference is built around football ... sorry WSU.
If it wasn't for football ... Some of us wouldn't be here. Navy, Cincy and Temple jump out there. So hurry up ECU ... And start bringing up your hoops program while your at it !!

Appreciate the kind words. I really long for the time when it’s an all out dog fight in the East between Cincy, UCF and ECU (insert Temple fans). That said, this thread is about predictions. Mo left us with a few (very few) pieces and Houston is upgrading talent very quickly. I think we’ll be much better this year but fear it won’t show in results with our tough schedule. I see 4-5 wins again with a very big jump in 21’ but I sure hope I get surprised.

You guys have an impressive football stadium. I need to come to the next Cincinnati at ECU game. I've never seen a game there but have heard great things about it.

RE: 2020 Football Season Predictions
It'll be interesting to see how good ECU is. Honestly, of the "bottom feeders" of our conference, they're the only team that has hope. Ahlers is the most underrated QB in our conference, and perhaps the whole country. They can certainly win 5 games before their October 24 bye week, and they have the benefit of playing Tulsa and Tulane after that.

I would argue that they have the LEAST hope of all the “bottom feeders”. They got blown out by Tulsa last year at home, and also lost to usf if my memory is correct. I wouldn’t consider Tulane a bottom feeder but if you do then I would point out that they’ve recruited well and made back to back bowl games. I think ECU will improve but not be better than 5-7 at the absolute best.

I think Cincy and UCF will be the best teams in the conference next season. I could see both finishing with 1 loss and UCF holding the tiebreaker over Cincy to go to the championship game. Gonna be tough for Cincy to win @UCF but it's gonna be a hell of a game.

No divisions this year so if Cincy and UCF are the best 2 teams, we’ll play again in the championship.

Yes, UConn will no longer be in the conference after this summer. We will have 11 teams this season, we can’t have divisions.

It was hard enough to know UCONN was in the AAC when they played here so my bad about the mistake lmao That should help us quite a bit, having the two best teams in one division is a bit unfair. Good to know we have a fall back plan and a potential rematch in the CCG

I agree with you everything except unfortunately Notre Dame vs Navy. I think I'd be more inclined to take Temple over Miami, which would be just as good.

I think Memphis will be better than Cincy. Cincy is a good team but Ridder is a bit overrated and Warren is gone. Memphis returns practically everybody and their new coach shouldn’t be a problem.
