There better be a big time pass rush. Those top two returning corners have been beaten soundly on a consistent basis during their careers at JMU.

Agreed. Corner is probably the biggest question mark for me right now. Felt like we struggled last year and he lost some of that talent. It’s probably a little late to pick up a transfer CB at this point right? Hoping AJ Webb can make an immediate impact.

There's still some positional changes that will likely happen. Webb and Norwood are still listed as DB's according to official roster instead of S or CB, so take that for what it's worth.

Agreed. I would think if Norwood is a big playmaker and impact individual that the staff believes him to be that he slides to corner to get on the field this year and move to safety likely next. CB and WR have interesting questions to be answered.

I feel like Wayne Davis' talent is being wasted where they are playing him. I'd have moved him to corner last year when we were having injury problems.

If the corners struggle, I could see that happening and then maybe move Que Reid or someone into the SPUR position. The thing that sucks is missing spring ball didn't give Wayne the opportunity to take reps at corner so I'm not sure there's enough time for him to get comfortable out there. It's kind of a different world.

All the new 2020 DB's (Webb, Malignaggi, Norwood, Coakley) are listed as DB---Not CB or S. I'd suspect that based on size measurable's Webb and Malignaggi will be CB's. Norwood is probably a S, that is were he played at UMass. Based on size Coakley could probably play either CB or S
https://jmusports.com/sports/football/roster/2020

Webb, Malignaggi and Norwood were early enrollee's. Considering that we're not too deep at that position, the fact that those 3 were early enrollee's was most likely by design. The staff is probably hoping they'll step up. Missing spring ball is a bummer. It obviously would have been very beneficial to matriculate those 3 into the system early.

Winter S&C was working well for Malignaggi and Norwood

Starting this season, college football players will be allowed to wear the number "0". Looks like the first JMU player to wear it will be Isaac Ukwu.

One thing I don't like is allowing multiple guys to wear the same number, which we have a lot of looking at the roster particularly with the single digit numbers. It looks like in each case they've split it between an offensive/defensive player but I'm still not a big fan of that. Like, let's say you wanted to use a CB at receiver in a certain set or both of those guys are part of a special teams unit? Can you have multiple guys in the game with the same number at the same time?

RE: 2020 Depth Chart
From what I understand you are not allowed to have players with the same number on the field at the same time. In your case one of the players would have to changer thier jersey to be able to enter the game at that point. I also agree that I do not like having numbers repeated between the O and D, it i just confusing. NOt like there is a shortage of numbers. Guess some players just get attached to certain numbers throughout their playing days.

Also was not aware 0 wasn't allowed. Wonder why and why they changed it all of a sudden? Any one for double zero? If I had ever played a high school or college level sport I always wanted my number to be pi, 3.14159!!

There was a story several years ago about an Ivy League team playing soccer, and all the players wore jerseys with the number 3. I think it was a rebellion of sorts to make it tough on the ref when calling fouls.

Don't count on ever seeing an end to allowing both a defensive and offensive player to have the same number. There are so many players on a college football roster it's a necessity. Scroll through the JMU roster real quick and see how many numbers are unused. 4, 54, 68, 78, 80, 87, 99. Seven numbers unused, you don't even get out of the single digits before you have more than seven duplicate numbers... Even with an unused single digit number.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe #4 is the lone retired number at JMU.

RE: 2020 Depth Chart
I know it gets confusing with double numbers, but with retired numbers and so many athletes it’s unavoidable for many programs. I still remember going to a game as a child and seeing a Penn State player putting one of those pinnies one you’d wear in practice, just so they wouldn’t have the same # out there at the same time which is easy with offense and defense but can be a juggling act with special teams.

There are actually three retired JMU numbers - 4, 80, and 87 - Scott Norwood, Gary Clark, and Charles Haley, respectively.... Retired JMU football jersey numbers

Not that I'm suggesting there be a 4th retired right now, but if there was - who would it be?

Lezotte?

I'd say Arthur Moats would have a good shot at getting his number retired. He played in the NFL for a decade, is transitioning to the broadcasting side of things, and has been close with JMU since he graduated.
