RE: MAC Basketball Week 2 (11/11 thru 11/17)
When making sure the EMU @ North Texas game wasn't on TV or webcast, I saw the nickname of the UNT arena was the "Super Pit" (opened in 1973). So I looked it up...

Quote:The UNT Coliseum, better known as The Super Pit, is home to Mean Green men's and women's basketball and to a long and colorful history.

The nickname Super Pit derives from the Coliseum's predecessor, the Men's Gym, which was known as the Snake Pit, a moniker allegedly stemming from stories of the gym flooding in heavy rain which occasionally drove local snakes from their homes and into the building.

Some post-week 1 power ranks

Toledo grabs the top spot, Bulls drop, Chips rising. What a performance by CMU, I know its one of worst schools in Div 1, but its still a 60 point division 1 win.

1. Toledo
2. Ball State
3. Central Michigan
4. Bowling Green
5. Kent State
6. Buffalo
7. Northern Illinois
8. Akron
9. Miami-OH
10. Ohio
11. Western Michigan
12. Eastern Michigan

Good point its probably too early to do tiers. Right now my rankings for EMU are entirely based on last year's stats minus what is returning this year. Since EMU has not played a D1 team yet, I have not weighted any of this year's games into their ranking. Through 11/12 games here is how I have projected conference wins, quite a log jam at the top right now in these projections:

Kent State 12.0
Toledo 11.9
Central Michigan 11.8
Bowling Green 11.8
Ball State 11.6
Buffalo 9.9
Akron 8.6
Northern Illinois 8.1
Miami-OH 7.1
Ohio 6.6
Western Michigan 4.9
Eastern Michigan 4.1

I do have EMU as having the 2nd hardest conference schedule. Only Miami-OH has a more difficult conference schedule.

How do you adjust for teams like Ohio? They have 8 freshman, a grad transfer, and someone who sat out all of last year on the roster.

Any rating system this early into the season is going to be severely flawed, even reputable ones like kenpom. The sample size is just too small right now to make real determinations. By Christmas everyone should have played about a dozen games and participated in at least 1 tournament. That's about when real educated guesses can be made.

Ohio moves to 3-0 with their second road win on the season, beating Iona 81-72. Jason Preston with his 3rd double-double in as many games, although today it was rebounds instead of assists that joined points. 27 points, 14 boards. He has been an absolute magician so far this year.

Holy cow who are these guys??? That’s two quality road wins against solid mid major teams! I can’t wait to get a couple of the injured players back to contribute! I’m so proud of Coach Boals and the way he has this team playing right now. Don’t get me wrong it’s going to be a roller coaster season but the difference in play vs. the past two season is amazing. You can really see the difference in coaching! Go Bobcats!

It’s hard not to be ridiculously excited about the direction of this team. Preston looks like an elite player. Dartis is coming back into form. There are new guys making meaningful contributions. And, by the way, some of the most promising players are injured and have yet to play. My brain is still expecting exasperating losses and long stretches of garbage play but my heart is dreaming of watching this team in Cleveland. At the very least we’re finally getting entertaining men’s hoops back in Athens.

All they have proved so far is they aren't as some feared the very worst team in D1 basketball this season.

Could they finish above last place in the MAC? They could have a winning non-conference record and still finish last.
