People keep making it seem like Hawaii has a hard time scheduling anybody, that's really not the case.

https://fbschedules.com/ncaa/hawaii/

As was said, they had 2 P5 home games this year, and have plenty of future home games against P5 teams - Oregon, Vanderbilt, UCLA, Arizona

Unlike the 11 game schedule days, people are hesitant to add another game. If you win your division (or are top 2 in Big XII) you are looking at playing 14 maybe 15 and if you go to Hawaii and take advantage of the extra game you are looking at playing between 13 and 16 depending on your circumstances.

The new redshirt rules help depth but Hawaii is a hard dang trip if you can't get an open date the next week.

NMSU is what most AD's and coaches look for in a home/home, a team you have a shot of beating in both meetings.

Apparently NMSU is having decent luck with schedules down the road because I know a couple potential deals with AState have fallen through. At one point there was a 2-1-1 offer with two games in Jonesboro, one in Las Cruces, and one in Little Rock but the people in Little Rock pushing the deal wanted AState to be on the hook for the guarantee for the "neutral site" game in Little Rock if they failed to come up with the needed sponsors and the two schools were struggling to find common dates for two of the proposed years. The last one rumored was a deal that would have brought NMSU to Jonesboro with the Aggies and Red Wolves then concluding the home/home in Mexico (not New). AState had a conflict for the desired return game but I was told that the sponsor was offering enough to make it worth doing but haven't heard a word about it in the last 7-8 months.

Looks like Hawaii's going for the nice-and-shiny win-loss record model.

FWIW, BYU offered Hawaii an annual series, similar to what BYU has with Boise State and USU. Could have included a visit from BYU in 2021.

They should have a mainland center, especially for athletes.

I laughed at that, but seriously, that would seem to be what is needed to make them a viable football program. Just way too far from the mainland, and over the ocean.

Hawaii has had a solid program. They made the Sugar Bowl in 08 (Got demolished in the process, but still). Nick Rolovich has them in a good direction, they should make their 3rd bowl game in his 4 years as head coach this year.

It'll be interesting to see if what June Jones resuscitated can in any way be sustained.

June Jones regrets leaving Hawai’i. Destroyed his career.

That would make a ton of sense. Perhaps one of the MWC’s Cal St schools would enter into some joint venture together. The Cal St school would put up the land and maybe kick in some for construction and maintenance and Hawaii would pay the lion’s share.

Hawaii could use it when they needed it but the host school could utilize it when Hawaii doesn’t.

Having said that, it is getting harder to convince teams to fly all the way to Honolulu for games, even with the Week Zero and 13th game exemptions. Coaches view the long trip as putting their team at a disadvantage the following week. UH used to have success luring big-time programs (Wisconsin, Alabama, Michigan State) to end their seasons with a warm weather game in paradise, but that ended with the advent of conference championship games.

This should help quash the myth that UH is a good candidate for independence. The scheduling challenges if we left or were pushed out of the MWC could seriously endanger our football program.

It doesn't help that Hawai'i's fans have a horrible reputation.

Cincinnati has visited Hawai'i twice since 2000. Both ended up with Hawai'i fans throwing things at UC players & band members. One of them ended up with UC being forced to bring a bus on the field to evacuate our people safely.

I have heard that about Hawaii fans as well. Does anyone know what their exact problem is with visiting schools and their fan bases?

I would expect that kind of fan behavior in a place like Philadelphia, not Honolulu. Why are Hawaii fans so violent?

Yep screwed up the NOLA Bowl in 2002. Hope was to bring in Tulane to face North Texas and get a big crowd but the Bearcats had been to Hawaii in regular season and it got unpleasant enough (Hawaii won 20-19) that C-USA sent Tulane and the Greenies took care of bidness.

To make the NOLA Bowl situation worse, the Bearcats were hosting a ranked opponent in men's basketball the same day and if I remember right at least part of the men's game overlapped the bowl game.
