I guess it’s better than playing 2 FCS teams

Bad planning by the AD. He claims UH has been trying to line up a second 2021 out-of-conference home opponent for the past five years with no success. Fans here aren't buying it, as UH playing the same team twice hasn't happened in many years if ever.

Having said that, it is getting harder to convince teams to fly all the way to Honolulu for games, even with the Week Zero and 13th game exemptions. Coaches view the long trip as putting their team at a disadvantage the following week. UH used to have success luring big-time programs (Wisconsin, Alabama, Michigan State) to end their seasons with a warm weather game in paradise, but that ended with the advent of conference championship games.

This should help quash the myth that UH is a good candidate for independence. The scheduling challenges if we left or were pushed out of the MWC could seriously endanger our football program.

The H&H with NMSU is kinda weird but H&H is fine in my opinion.
A good way to build a rivalry.

They should have given UConn and UMass a call.

The most in FBS

Oh I agree lining up 12 games as an independent would destroy your FB program and that the MWC (or PAC) is the only option but it’s shocking that Hawaii can’t get 4 OOC opponents lined up.
Iowa played at Hawaii in the Hayden Fry golden era. (And lost lol)

I have always been surprised that Hawaii has a football program. The distance to the mainland seems insurmountable.

They're just holding out until teleportation is invented.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if, once 2020 is fully squared away, Benedict turned around and "broke into" that agreement and turned each side into home-and-homes, flying out to Hawaii to unlock an extra week in the schedule and then hosting NMSt in 2021.

I laughed at that, but seriously, that would seem to be what is needed to make them a viable football program. Just way too far from the mainland, and over the ocean.

With the 12th game, few schools are taking advantage of the 13th game option. I don't think anyone did last year.

Rocky Long at SDSU prefers a 2nd bye week for his players to rest rather than a 13th game. Especially now that if you make the conference championship it would be 14 games plus the bowl game.

A lot of coaches are thinking that way.

Coincidentally just yesterday I emailed Hawaii’s AD Dave Matlin suggesting basically the same thing. I hope he and Benedict can hook up and do some horse trading. It could help both programs with their scheduling challenges.

Hawaii has had a solid program. They made the Sugar Bowl in 08 (Got demolished in the process, but still). Nick Rolovich has them in a good direction, they should make their 3rd bowl game in his 4 years as head coach this year.

I don't see what the big deal is. UCONN or UMass might have made more sense from a recruiting standpoint, but generally NMSU is a bad to 6-6/7-5 program at best, so going to Las Cruces is a more than capable win.

RE: Why did Hawaii schedule H&H in 2021 vs New Mexico St?? - Stugray2 - 10-27-2019 03:08 AM

This looks for all the world like Army dropped Hawaii (4 game series) to make room for UConn (4 game series). Hawaii is not attractive anymore. The two game series solves a problem for both schools. NMSU and Hawaii both needed additional home games. This shows the problems both programs face.

Also Las Cruces is on Mountain Time, 4 hour time difference during MST, 3 hour time difference during MDT. That's better than 6 hour or 5 hour for EDT/EST (respectively).
