UC did not play as cleanly as we would like. Especially with the penalties. They got caught with a safety trying to cover a speed receiver. And a few other dumb mistakes. Our O line did not power through their D line like some prognosticators predicted.
Neither team overpowered the other. Neither showed overwhelming superiority in talent or speed.
But Houston made a lot more mistakes than we did, and that was the big difference.
Still a win. I still like it.
Winning when your not at your best is necessary for taking the next step. Sure I would prefer to see us play clean and put them away, but that’s not always going to happen. Let’s hope we can continue to reel off some wins over the next few weeks as we work on improving.
We are off to a great start again this season. If we can finish strong we will be playing for a conference title at the very least. All we can ask for and another sign that this staff has us on the right track.
in addition to getting a less than aesthetically-pleasing W, Ridder was 11/24/263 yards 3 Passing TDs and 1 Rushing TD and Javon Hicks had 2 INTs and a Fumble Recovery to go along with 3 tackles. Those lines could easily be offensive and defensive conference players of the week stats.
One good play. One bad play. Another good play. Another bad play.
I'm sending coach Fickell the bill for the drywall repairs in my house from me ramming my head through the wall on all those penalties.
Thats's gotta get fixed. And quick. They can't let this lack of discipline set in as the sleepwalk through the next four packs of bozos. Then they'll come up against Temple and Memphis and find that they were just fooling themselves.
Honestly looking at Houston’s schedule only Oklahoma beat them by more (18 points) so maybe a blowout wasn’t realistic. They have loses at Oklahoma, at Tulane, Washington State, and Cincinnati.
It wouldn’t shock me if they beat SMU, Navy, and Memphis at home. They have talent still.

Holding them back is a HOG!
I think King and the WR going RS because the year started tough is quitting and a good coach would say Transfer.

UC is good, but they are 20-35 good this year. The defense has stepped up, but the offense has some holes.
They will struggle against good teams and have big problems against top 12ish teams.
So anyone have the scoop on Tavion Thomas not making the trip?
Paper's version:
Where's No. 5? Sophomore running back Tavion Thomas did not make the trip, but a UC spokesperson did not confirm if it was injury related or a coach's decision. Thomas, who entered this week with the second-most rushing yards (190) on the team behind Warren and one touchdown, missed the season-opener against UCLA for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Been saying all week they were better than their record would indicate. They are still very talented and when considering we were on the road, coming off a big emotional home win, and that Houston is better than people realized, I expected a dogfight and a one possession win. Pretty much played out that way until the late pick six sealed it.
When the game was over, it occurred to me that Houston might be the best 2-4 team in the country.
This afternoon, when the new Saragin ratings became available, I scrolled from the top, and sure enough, the first team with just 2 wins was Houston, at # 66. Spoiling this just a little, was Northwestern at # 63, with a 1-4 record.
Houston (22) and Northwestern (5) both have high strength of schedule ratings. And to be complete, Fresno and Purdue were just behind Houston, both with 2 wins but significantly lower strength of schedule.
There are a # of teams rated lower than Houston with 4 and 5 wins.
The takeaway is that this was a good win on the road. Feel good about your team.

However, it's a very good road win at a tough opponent.
Agree. The coaching staff has largely downplayed most of the penalties but it’s time to fix it before it costs us a game we should win.
I’m glad this team continues to fight through it but if we continue to commit this many penalties it will eventually catch up to us. Let’s clean it up over the next few games.
Here's the beauty - we have our four most winnable games of the season over the next five weeks, with a bye week in there as well. It's the perfect time to teach, clean up mistakes and refine before heading into Temple, Memphis, hosting the AAC championship and Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. It's all playing out perfectly.
Can't sleep on Tulsa, they just took @SMU to overtime. @ECU + UCONN should be wins. @USF scares me...they just took down BYU

We can’t sleep on anyone, or it could end up a loss. Tulsa is at Nippert though so we should take care of business as long as we can stay focused.
@USF is the one I’m nervous about. USF has had a strange season but we should be favored in that game, as of now so while nothing is ever a given we should take care of business in all 4.
Did Fickell not have a Press conference after the game? Normally I am able to watch his post game press conference on YouTube but I don’t see one for Houston. There is normally a few players also interviewed but I don’t see either.

I couldn’t find anything either so assuming no. Anyone else know?

He was on 700wlw post game for his show. I heard that. I saw on twitter Mo Egger was there and covered the game and he was back in Cincy by 11 30pm so the team plane may have been a quick turnaround to get out of there and not stay until Sunday.
A win is a win and I'll always celebrate that. Somewhat quietly, Fickell may be putting together one of the finest seasons in Bearcat football history.
Still, I was concerned with what I'll call the early, easy scores for the 'Cats in Houston. My fear was that Houston would adjust, our offense would sputter, and the game would get very close. The UC defense is nearly world class halfway through the season; the offense is very much a work in progress. The penalties, and sometimes head scratching play calling, are frustrating to watch. Even the ESPN announcers commented several times on running Warren wide when he's more effective up the middle.
But the old saw certainly applies this season: the quality of our problems has improved immensely, under Fickell. To the extent that someone will probably want to put up a poll on Banter to guess the date when we first read, "Fickell to (insert beleaguered P5 program here) at season's end." Two consecutive weeks in the top 25 now so it won't be long until we have to deal with that distraction to this fine season. Let's enjoy the ride.

I think Holgorsen was involved in their decision to redshirt.
