3 Ls based on how we've been playing.
It's a triple-elimination tourney? Nice!!
We get a 'ghost runner' game there.

Considering it's double elimination, that would be quite the feat.
Schedule is here, RiceOwl. Our first game is tomorrow at 12:30 PM

I hope our third loss is not a player on the bus trip.

You’d have to ask Antarius.

Or check Twitter, for two of the five teams that have longer trips than our Owls, that is:
Marshall took flight through Chicago (2-hour layover) to New Orleans, then a bus to Biloxi: https://twitter.com/HerdBaseball/status/...6745073664
UTSA took a bus: https://twitter.com/UTSABSB/status/1130454734375198727

DH Andrew Dunlap & pitcher Matt Canterino named 1st team All C-USA selections. Canterino also garners Pitcher of the Year honors.
SS Trei Cruz & pitcher Evan Kravetz named second team All C-USA.
Canterino will also take the mound for Rice’s postseason opener vs S. Miss on Wed.
(Chronicle tweet from an hour ago)
Are we absolutely sure Kravetz is healthy?

RE: Weary Baseball Team Heads to Biloxi
On the bus/transportation issue, Rice by definition in almost every sport faces disadvantages vs. its conference foes, as its sits in a city with 2 great airports and thus as a host will always be easier to get to than almost everyone/everywhere else. When ECU was in the conference, that was a tough flight + one-hour bus trip, which doesn't match Marshall, but was no picnic for anyone involved.
When Houston was in the conference, the paired-share arrangement was also advantageous to conference foes, as when they came here, they stayed in one place for the 3 day, 2 game trip, but we would have to go on the road (travel someplace) and play, and then travel the next day, and play the following day.

RE: Weary Baseball Team Heads to Biloxi
Are bus rentals really so expensive that the athletic department couldn't spring for another rental with working AC? Understandable for the 1st ride since they didn't know in advance, but did they really make the team ride the same bus with the broken AC on the return? Pretty sad.

RE: Weary Baseball Team Heads to Biloxi
It seems to me that we need a new travel agent.
Related to that:
It sounds like the baseball travel budget has been cut and is forcing our guys to take less than the best.
This would never have been allowed under the previous regime, but then the new guy will not stand up to his master.
Maybe this is the reason you don't run Daniel Watson off when he seemed to manage this for years with no hiccups.
Of course, let's not forget that the biggest $ loser football charters flights to Dallas. No seven hour bus rides for that winning group!

That's a bit of a misnomer. The costs of scholarships for 85 guys (which obviously no other sport comes close to) are the only reason why football could be considered the "biggest $ loser". In terms of dollars actually in the door vs. dollars spent/paid to someone other than "Rice University," it's not even close.

Could this be related to the (hostile?) takeover/acquisition of the RBI club by the University Sports Department?
I seem to remember someone (skycatcher?) mentioned that this was a major factor in per diem food issues vs. a private funded source of team road meals. Did this private funding effort in the past roll over to transportation as well?
I have zero interaction with the RBI, either currently or previously, and this post is the product of completely rank and unbridled speculation.......

I think that's a very legit question at this point. Given USM's heavily left-hand laden lineup and the way Kravetz dominated it a couple weeks back, one would think Evan would get the call tomorrow if healthy, and not Canterino, especially since Evan didn't pitch last week.

RE: Weary Baseball Team Heads to Biloxi
Aside from the recent disasters on the baseball travel front, there are always a number of "inconveniences" that could be addressed....(i.e. the basketball teams loses a tough one at UTEP on a questionable call and has a 4:30 a.m. wake-up call the next day).
As an anecdote...I worked at a UH women's basketball game a few years ago when they played Alabama...and surprisingly, the women's coach at that time was Wendell Hudson. After the game I offered to take Wendell to dinner and he told me that at Alabama all major teams charter (i.e. use the Athletic Department's airplane) to every game and the Athletic Department's bus meets the team at their destination. After the game, they get back on their own bus and head to their own plane and fly back. Wendell estimated that they would be back in Tuscaloosa by about 12:30 and all players would be home by 1:00....and they would be in class the next day.
I know we're not in that class for travel but every little inconvenience that we can eliminate will help with athletics and academics...and maybe slow the departure rate of student-athletes.

IIRC, wasn’t one of the reasons for starting the RBI Club was to provide funds so that things like this didn’t need to happen? Maybe not quite the Alabama level of luxury, but a far cry from this.

Yes, that was the original intent-- the funds were to be used to "enhance the student-athlete experience". And the RBI Club was managed that way until it was taken over by the Athletic Department last Summer, and Sarah Longpre and Daniel Watson were forced out.

Bottom line is that I’m not sure there’s a single constituency in the donor/fan base besides maybe Women’s Basketball that likes JK.
