Um, YEAH! In fact, the conspiracy theorist in me already believes that Charleston got so many calls their way against us last Saturday because the league has to ensure that the Cougars finish top 4 in the league (and absolutely top 6) in order to ensure hopefully at least 2 games (and 2 larger crowds) at the tournament. If we had beaten them, the Cougs risked falling behind a bunch of teams in the standings. We'll see how it plays out ...but if CofC does not represent well in the tournament then the only hope for attendance would be UNCW or W&M making it to the finals.

(Rocco can feel free to ignore the previous paragraph).

His passing has greatly improved and he played very hard Saturday. I just hope the guys can rally together with the coaches and get a win Thursday. It is not like they aren't trying or giving up.

I don't think we are necessarily demanding he get 50 points per game, but he should be touching the ball at least once on every possession. I feel like when we go on our scoring droughts, the ball rarely goes to him in the post and we just do our aimless passing around the perimeter for 20 seconds before jacking up a low percentage 3

I would argue that we're not lamenting that Knight doesn't get the ball every possession, but that we're lamenting he doesn't get the ball in the low post every possession. He is an excellent passer, and few teams bring a double-team that can smother his passing lanes. Nobody would be upset if he scored 0 and had 15 assists, but he's not getting those chances either.

I would have to agree that he needs the ball in the low post more. I'd love to see a 2-1 mix of low post touches to high post touches.

RE: MBB Disappointment
I have tremendous respect for what coach Shaver has accomplished with W&M hoops. I feel the same way about what Bob McKillop has done at Davidson. These two programs both have played some beautiful offensive basketball.
A couple of seasons ago Davidson added Kevin Kuwilk to the staff. He really has improved Davidson's defense. I will add that the players Davidson is getting are a little taller and more athletic than they used to get, but huge difference in defensive efficiency (no I can't quote the numbers).

An addition like this to the Tribe staff could make a big difference in coming seasons, the Tribe is getting taller and more athletic as well.

Continuing to hire only former players doesn't bring in new ideas.

OK. Where’s the money?

We don’t even have the money for a GA. Personally, I thought retaining Harrison this year to help Knight’s low post skills would have been a great idea. (Not interested in a position for Rowley next year.)

Given how underpaid Shaver is, it’s a miracle we’ve retained Holmes.

If you want to hire a Rocco-approved assistant co-head coach you need to pay bucks. I’m not sure firing Holmes to open up that position would open up sufficient salary.

Without increased funding from W&M, and the development of a robust booster club, we’re whistling in the dark. Any assistant coach we could afford would have to be entry-level caliber.

Well, there are only a couple of ways to fund major improvements to the program, and only one of those ways is remotely acceptable from a political standpoint. I think the AD spends a lot of her time and resources searching for a handful of wealthy people capable of making transformational gifts.

And when she secures one or more transformational gifts, I think her plan is use them in transformational ways, which hasn't always been the case.

Until then, it's bake sales.

It's premature more than anything else. We are going to be favorites in five of our last nine games, underdogs three times, and one toss-up. UNCW is going to be favorite 2x/underdog 6x/tossup 1x. Drexel is going to be favorite 2x/underdog 5x/tossup 2x. Beat both at the Kap (very doable) and we are in strong position for #5, and then the end result will be a 4/5 game where we're favored with a possible semi game where we'd be reasonably-sized underdogs...which is exactly what we expected going in. We're the youngest team in the conference, and it's meant throwing our PGs to the wolves before they were ready. If the dust settles and it turns out we've really blown our opportunity, I'll be the first to shout it from the rooftops. But the evidence just isn't there at this point.

It happens in one of two ways:

1) The hoops program gets more aggressive in shaking down donors and boosters to get the resources it needs, much like football did;
2) Other athletic teams get axed and the resources diverted to hoops.

Ideally it would be 1). It feels like 2) is inevitable.

I came across this list of the top 25 D1 head coaches handcuffed by various circumstances - Shaver comes in at 13.

With regard to point #2 "Other athletic teams get axed and the resources diverted to hoops."

My son is a senior student-athlete in one of the "other" sports you reference. I've come to see first-hand that the alum (and their parents) from these "other" sports are some of the biggest W&M athletic donors. And most successful alum -- who continue to give back to W&M.
And you may not know this, but a few of these "other" sports have actually built their own personal endowments ... some of them well over million dollars. This protects them from being cut. For example, when W&M cut swimming and wrestling back in the 90's, there was a huge amount of financial donations from swimming alum and supporters to keep the program afloat and this fund continues to protect the sport from being cut.

Right on, Pete24! I know that Gymnastics is another sport with a large endowment to protect it. Also, that was quite good when you used the word "afloat" to describe the swimming program. Was that on purpose or a happy accidental phrasing? Kudos, either way.
