RE: MBB Disappointment
We all desperately want to make the NCAA tournament and stop being a punchline. We all understand that what we have been doing hasn't yet kicked down the door.

Most of us probably agree with AD Huge on BB (Men's and Women"s) being the best shot at higher recognition of W&M Athletics.

Got RIbe has boiled down the scenarios available to us succinctly. Tony has overachieved with what he has to work with at W&M, just as many of the coaches at W&M have, but he has not gotten us to the dance. W&M is 0-9 in conference finals. Snake bitten is an understatement.

Tony got Hampden-Sydney to the Class III NCAA's on several occasions, working with relatively comparable resources with his competition. Tony has come within a whisker at W&M working with fewer resources than what his competition has. What stands out to you in this comparison? Perhaps it may be the resources that he is given in comparison with those given at the schools with which he is competing.

I don't see how firing Tony and bringing in some one new without changing the resource thing accomplishes much. What am I missing?

With a limited recruiting budget, Tony brings in the highest talent level we have had since perhaps Bruce Parkhill left, with the possible exception of Charlie's time. Speaking of Charlie, how does his W&M record compare with what he was doing before arriving here?

I think we must first try to move the needle on resources prior to moving on to a new coach. My personal favorite would be a dedicated practice facility shared with the ladies program. I'm sure we each have one because there are many. I feel that adding program resources would be more productive than a coaching change at this time. The Laycocke Center helped with football, I'm not sure why the same wouldn't apply to basketball.

Good post - I agree on all counts.

Question though - I've noticed through the years you love to put an "e" on the end of Laycock. You've done it many times. I know you're sharp enough to know the "e" is on the end of Jimmye. Is there something there or just a continued attempt to be funny?

RE: MBB Disappointment
The Laycock angle is interesting and should be mentioned.

Laycock made the football Dance (fill in the blank) times, and some posters here still wanted him fired.

This “firing” of our coaches mantra is just a complete joke.

MBB Disappointment
Thank you, Coach Shaver. Thanks for taking an awful program to CAA Championship games, winning CoY, and graduating nearly every player. Thank you for attending football and baseball games. Thank you for being one of the best coaches--in any sport--in W&M history. You, sir, are awesome.

And it should be added, often when discussing upcoming games, opponent fans talk about being worried about Shaver's coaching- even when they are favored. I get the feeling opponents respect Shaver more than we do.

  1. Stay the course and hope that our solid but imperfect coach can get us over edge.
  2. Begin funding the program at levels comparable to the teams we compete against.
  3. Fire Tony and hope to find a miracle in the coaching bargain basement.
At least until we can figure out #2, #1 makes the most sense to me. Advocating for number three is fanciful.

+1000

It gets said a lot that members of this board think he can do no wrong. That's not the case, but few think there are coaches that can do better that will take this job. I'll echo what was said elsewhere. He's coached us to be in position to win the conference and go to the NCAA tournament. That's all a coach can do.

Nope. Just inattentive to detail and not really paying attention to how he spells his name. Thanks for the public correction. I'll try to do better going forward.

Are you sure that shouldn't be plains and trains? We don't want to trigger the "e" tax by having unneeded "e"'s at the end of words...

Bake sales and car washes. Maybe even a GoFundMe.

As far as resources go, last time I checked, our endowment was around 900 Million Dollars! Yet we all act like we are the Little Sisters of the Poor. Money should be available...IF it was actually made a priority of this administration to fix the funding disparity issue. If Rowe is unwilling to fund basketball at the CAA average AT MINIMUM, then we should move to the Patriot League as soon as possible.
