...um...what?...
Yea ok maybe YOU should avoid the train.
Lived in Atlanta for 5 years took the train from Civic Center to Midtown 5 times a week. Literally got off at Civic at midnight a lot of nights and never once got mugged, accosted, anything. Sure there were some drunks sometimes and yea I got asked for money once or twice but like that happens in every single city in America.
MARTA needs to expand, period, end sentence, next topic. SPECIFICALLY to the new Braves stadium. Anyone denying that clearly doesn't realize where they're living. Atlanta is a city on the rise and folks need to wake up!
*steps off box
Unlike last 50yrs, I think MARTA will see a period of rapid growth during upcoming decades. This generation of taxpayers seem smarter and less stubborn about things.

Panhandling is a crime, BTW, but I understand the city of Atlanta not wanting to crack down on it for fear of being insensitive to the less fortunate, the under-served, or whatever politically-correct classification you want to hang on them, what with votes and all.
Ha. The police don't crack down on it for the same reason GSP doesn't crack down on the people who do 60 in a 55 zone. But feel free to spin it however you like.
You're absolutely right...and if the GSP did crack down on those doing 60 in a 55 zone...then you'd see far less people driving 60 in a 55 zone. Transitive property works here, too...
But they don't, because they have bigger issues to tend to.
And therein lies the problem. You keep chipping away at the margins..."5 mph over isn't REALLY speeding", or "marijuana isn't really a gateway drug so it should be legalized, or "but the child was born here so the parents can stay., too"...and before you know it you are no longer a nation of laws, but a nation of suggestions, and anyone can do anything they want as long as there's a chance they can argue what they did wasn't really that bad. I want no part of that scenario, and I don't think you do, either.
Then you should round up some mounties and form the panhandling protection force. I'd rather the police not be on the side of the road writing a 4 mph over ticket when a reckless driver passes. Or arresting a panhandler instead of responding to a 911 call. And our nation of laws have always had gray areas where interpretation was needed. And I'm just fine with that. It allows the country to evolve over time. It allows a 200+ year old document relevancy.

DC Metro and MARTA were built around similar times. Guess which backward minded city in the middle of a red state impeded the progress of a rail system (lol paraphrasing my professor's words)...learned this in my urban development sociology class and...pretty shocking.
LOL does your professor realize that MARTA was created when the State was Blue? And the State was Blue until the Republicans took over the State House in 2005, which was the first time in 130 years? So yeah, it was Democrats that decided that MARTA should be the largest mass transit system that does not receive state funding.
And its actually Republicans who have been studying how to fix all of this: https://www.myajc.com/news/local/hour-co...LabPgC4FO/

Correct me if my 20th century policy sci class was wrong. Didnt Southern Democrats defect to Republicans around that time? I meant Blue/Red as loosely based description of each political spectrum's principles, not some strict sense of definition of Demo/Repub parties.

Those nice suburban people didn't want those bl... um, I mean "other" people to bring crime to their neighborhoods. Now, the main areas that voted against it are the main ones sitting in traffic for hours.
Lived in ATL suburbs for a total of 20 years...14 the most recent stint, and I can count the number of times I took MARTA anywhere on both hands and have fingers left over. Why? Because I was accosted for money by vagrants/drunks/punks EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I rode it. Last time I rode MARTA was to the 2014 GS vs. GSU game...hadn't even left the North Springs station before I was being panhandled for cash....and it'd been five years since my last ride. I guess being white means I have spare cash I can (read: should) redistribute to those 'less fortunate'.
You can bet your sweet arse I never voted to bring it out to the 'burbs...
You sound like a fragile guy. Have you since recovered?
Anything but. I don't take kindly to people in my face begging for money as if they have a right to do so. I don't go to their places of business, homes, or neighborhoods and beg for anything...why shouldn't I expect the same courtesy. In almost 40 years riding MARTA regularly, I can can count people in my face panhandling on one hand.

This shift began around WWII and was essentially how it is today between party lines by the 1980s, with the last of the southern democrats crossing the aisle. I don't have a dog in the fight, I tend to vote both ways, especially on the local and state levels.

Say what you will, but it’s the conservative base that continuously votes against Marta expansion into Cobb. It’s a shame too because 75 north is a disaster, although the new express lanes help a little.

He is talking about up in your face panhandling on MARTA. No that doesn't happen every day. Any foolishness I have seen regularly involves young people as a nuisance and MARTA police is usually responsive by the next train stop of something is posted in MARTA See and Say App.

If common sense would prevail... The western & Atlantic line that goes past Cumberland Mall, Downtown Smyrna, Lockheed, Downtown Marietta, Kennesaw Battlefield, Downtown Kennesaw and Downtown Acworth is state owned as is the right of way. It would be the cheapest option, and it would be a rail one. You would just have to connect Vinings/Cumberland with Bankhead, Sandy Springs or 5 points since the line goes all the way to the gulch. Bankhead might be the easiest as they are trying to connect the Silver Comet with the Beltline near the quarry. But I-285 to Sandy Springs could be likely.

It's very frustrating that when I go to other international cities they are actively moving rocks , digging and laying track and not just talking about a 30 year plan.
