However, to clarify, I thought my Tribe Club donations went towards funding athletic scholarships. It seems like this could have been bought using general Alumni Society funds, or something like that instead of with Tribe Club funds. Does anyone know how much it cost at the auction? (Maybe the cost was so low as to make it a moot point as to where the funds came from).

From the Tribe Club website: “By providing important resources for scholarships, coaching salaries, equipment and facilities, Tribe Club members improve the quality of all aspects of William & Mary Athletics.“

I trust it was a well thought out decision to enhance the Tribe facilities. Certainly not an expense outside of the established mission of the Tribe Club.

I still think that "I trust it was a well thought out decision" depends on how much the Tribe Club paid for it (and nobody has chimed in on that; don't Tribe Club members have a right to know where their donations are going?). Those are funds not going to scholarships or even coaches' salaries. I guess I will reserve final judgment until I see it in person later today.

It was supposedly purchased from a school in the Midwest that went out of business for around $12K....they sent a truck to pick it up and then had to get repairs and refinishing done locally (costing much more than the $12K price tag).

Thanks for the info!

Worth the investment. Tribe Plaza was a big hit with returning alums at HC...when I was there on Friday and Saturday everyone was taking selfies with the Griffin statue and of their kids with it.

Will become a popular landmark on the campus.

Realism? Did you actually just use that word? LOL - We are talking about a creature that is half lion and half eagle. Right!

I meant it in the classical statue sense. The Griffon is about as real as very anatomically correct Zeus or Aphrodite statues found in classic architecture worldwide. Classic architecture is exactly how I would describe the W&M campus. Would the statue have been just as effective with out the visible sack? Sure. The school didn't have a say in that and I'm pretty sure the fact wasn't advertised when purchased.

Of course the contribution to the Griffin's privates come via its lion DNA. Cojones>Cloacae

I wonder if there is an intention to let the statue patinate. I think that would put it closer in look to other statues around Old Campus.

We are in the midst of a culture of outrage. Everything is an epidemic, offensive, and unjust.

I do believe college students had a giggle at testicles.

I'm skeptical there is actual "outrage"...

Honestly, how immature do you have to be to be offended by testicles. I ALMOST wrote the authors but simply decided the correspondence would be completely useless. For a bit I thought it was a joke. Somehow, they were serious.

RE: The Tribe Plaza
There are some mythological beasts that are created but do not breed themselves. I decided to go to Wikipedia to see if the Griffin was such a creature (which, if so, means that it probably would not have even had any private parts).

Here is the Wiki link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffin

Here are three interesting quotes from the article:

"In heraldry, a griffin always has forelegs like an eagle's hind-legs. A type of griffin with the four legs of a lion was distinguished by perhaps only one English herald of later heraldry as the Opinicus, which also had a camel-like neck and a short tail that almost resembles a camel's tail." --- So, since the statue has front legs of a lion, is it really an Opinicus??!!

"In British heraldry, a male griffin is shown without wings, its body covered in tufts of formidable spikes, with a short tusk emerging from the forehead, as for a unicorn. The female griffin with wings is more commonly used." --- Ho ho!! Since the statue has wings, is it a female? If so, then it certainly shouldn't have any testicles!

"The official seal of Purdue University was adopted during the University's centennial in 1969." -- Apparently that seal has a griffin. Probably of interest only to NJ Alum.

Lastly, I hope this picture shows up; if not, it is on the Wiki link. This is a really cool looking Griffin at the Farkasreti Cemetery in Budapest.

I hope Rowe and the rest of the administration listen to these students and do the right thing... The right thing is to ignore these complaints because they are absolutely rediculous. For a supposedly liberal university, outrage at nudity in artwork seems other worldly. This is a story I'd expect from a mid west Bible belt college.

Outrage over statues isn't a Bible college thing.

I'm not an art history major but I thought throughout history the Uber religious have knocked over statues and painted on clothing after the fact. I'm not saying it is tied exclusively to the religious, but modesty is definitely a trait tied to religion.

I'm puzzled and disappointed by the lack of tolerance by the students at a state run progressive, liberal arts university in the year 2018. The controversy about a statue of a mythical creature, voted on by students and adopted by the university as a mascot is as silly and immature as shouting down a speaker who is on campus to educate students on their first amendment rights of free speech.

I didn't read the petition. I only read the flat hat article. I hope it was a joke and I am too dense to pick up on it.

I referred to the students, certainly from the same cloth, defacing our Jefferson statue and any other statue they deem offensive.
