CIT/CBI
What are everyone's thoughts on the possibility of a pay fir play tournament? Is it worth the expense? Should we try to get a road team slot for free?
Coach keatts has definitely turned the culture around and people are excited about this program again. If we can get something that makes financial sense i would love to see our 3 seniors rewarded

RE: CIT/CBI
While my initial take was "NCAA or bust", I've changed my mind. I say we pay the ~ 35k for the home game. After a fantastic season and so many years devoid of postseason play, not to mention another year where I feel we had too few D-I home games (the St. Andrew's game was more like an exhibition), these three seniors deserve an additional send-off game.
And it'll also be nice for youngsters Talley, Ogbodo, Gettys and Pugh to get at least one more game in, if not a few more.

So i get it, for all the reasons 08 mentions, and i think they could make money if there is a home game. That said, let's not call it "postseason". Anything you pay to play in is not "postseason" IMO.

Anything beyond the regular season is considered "postseason". And even if it's not what you consider to be legitimate, much like college baseball has summer leagues, it's nice to get any additional experience for your squad once the season ends.
For the non-Seniors, think of it as part of our preparation for 2015-16. And for the seniors consider it one last hurrah.

It has to make financial sense, and it can't be done for sentiment only.

RE: CIT/CBI
We went through this last year at W&M as we could have gone to either but turned them both down. Our boards were very mixed and both sides (pro/con) were very strong emotionally whether the team should have gone. That is part of the reason why the auto-NIT bid was important for us.
Does it make sense to pay to play is a question that was brought up by some?
Others looked to the experience for following years. In the CIT, ODU won it in 2009 and then beat Notre Dame in 2010 in the 1st round of the NCAAs the following year. In the CBI, VCU won in 2010 before going to the Final Four in 2011, Pitt won it in 2012 before going to the NCAAs the next year.

We had this conversation last year with many making fun of our resident EZ poster about their pay 2 play tourney. I stand by my opinion as far as what it should be considered. But like Bricks pointed out if it makes sense financially, why not?

Yep. As mentioned by tribe pride, ODU and VCU seemed to benefit from their experience. EZU's CIT title is the flip side where it did NOT help. The following season they went 13-17 (# 223 RPI). But then again they're EZU, so using them as an example might not matter.

The first step is getting an invite right?
After that, if the athletic department can make money off a home game... Do it. If not. Play on the road.

You dont get an invite until the financials are worked out. I dont see us paying 30k for a home game. Thats just not realistic right now when your cutting track. id love to see us go on the road with the cit paying travel expenses.

It is if there's something to be gained by it financially. Basketball is the driving force behind our entire athletic department's financial future. One of the many reasons we had to cut track in the first place is that our basketball team hadn't been relevant for a while. Now that it is it makes perfect sense to make investments where we see it being beneficial.

CIT cost a lot less to host, I think 15k. We made money. 3 large crowds and one sale outs or something like that of 5700 when we were building the practice facility and capacity was lower or we probably would have made even more.

We'll we got into a basketball conference with UConn, Temple, Cincy etc pretty soon after so I'd say it helped showing some signs of life and a #67 postseason RPI.
Kemp and Paul graduated, Sampson transferred to Georgia Tech and Armstrong quit the team. Basically one key player off that team returned.

Does it matter what they think? We got our ticket regardless.
We also have been getting multiple 5 star players to visit this year since the move. Eventually it's going to pay off in recruiting somewhere down the line with the practice facility and this conference being on TV with just about every game on ESPN. This top 10 player is high on us for example.

Players like that didn't even give us sniffs before. Things change.

This wasn't meant to turn into a pissing match thread. But based on the link you just sent and the offers the kid has basically, he will go to ECU only if he can't get into the other places

Right because having home and homes every year vs UConn, Cincy, Memphis, Temple, Tulsa, SMU etc and every game on ESPN is not attractive to players. Especially when you can stay home close to your family 45 minutes away. Players don't waste time coming to visit a place 3 times and going to our basketball camp if there is no interest.

Our first AAC recruit
We'll have access to a higher level of talent now, that's not even really debatable. Heck Richmond just signed an NBA contract and Paul was in NBA camps so it's not like we haven't had some talent here lately. That CIT team underachieved and if Lebo can't get us back in the top 100 then he'll go soon enough but the ceiling is much higher around here now than it's ever been.
