If you don't think recruits would reach out to players who transferred out of a program to find out why, you're kidding yourself. It's one click on a phone that they use to communicate with on social media every day of their life. The athlete in my family contacts players at other high schools all the time about "stuff" she hears about their program/coaches/players. They build relationships purely online. Not to mention, parents. You don't think they'd reach out to other parents or the students? C'mon.

Quick search on google/facebook/instagram to find a player or parent.

"Hey, my kid is being recruited my UNCW to play basketaball. I noticed your son requested a transfer. Do you mind if I ask why?" Naw, can't see that happening...07-coffee3

Sure it's a possibility.

We lost ONE recruit to the Coastal. That's clearly evidence our coach who was a proven recruiter thus far has clearly lost that edge too. Time to throw in the towel and just fear the worst.

You took a bigger leap than me, lol. I didn't say anything like that. We are recruiting in tough circumstances. He may be a great recruiter, but the wind is against him with a really bad two year record and 5 players transferring out last year.

Simple question, would YOU do research on a school recruiting you? And when you or your parents discovered 5 players transferred out, would you reach out to them on social media to find out what happened? I absolutley would. And as a parent, I know I would. Any coach would have a hard time recruiting under those circumstances, so this isn't a knock on his ability just stating the facts. I suppose you don't think these facts would have any affect on a decision by a recruit? Not to mention, do you think coaches recruting against UNCW don't bring up our record and transfers? Again, c'mon. It's the reason getting off to a great start is so important.

And once again, they also check the fan boards. That has just as much bearing as seeing players who were someone else's recruits and don't really fit the system. Only one of CB's recruits has left. And, from what I've been told, that was for financial reasons.

Gary? I thought that was because he wanted to be used as more than a spot shooter, but McGrath thought otherwise?

What do you think of Kennedy Koehler? We really need to add another JUCO or Grad transfer big man to go along with Linssen, Dodd, and Boggs.

Also 100% agree with you that you only need at most 9 or 10 solid players. Teams don't go 12 or 13 deep on any good team. Heck a lot only play 7 towards the end of the season. The other non rotation guys usually decide to transfer out to get more playing time. I believe Keatts said "guys want to play right away" or something like that after Mark Matthews decided to transfer.

You guys have a point on depth in games. But competition to get in the rotation is a must. Otherwise you are just handing a kid minutes from Day 1. I imagine that will be the case regardless down low next year.

Also Mark Matthews...I didn't even remember that kid and googled him. What was Keatts thinking. His highlight video I saw looked like some highlights I used to see on Saturday at the rec center. No way he is 6'5''. Maybe 6'2''.

RE: Recruit Updates
I believe that MM was tall enough but was a guy that was more of a shooter off the catch kind of guy that wasn't going to beat you off the dribble to finish and defend/rebound at a competitive level. Gary was definitely a catch and shoot guy at this level-not a bad defender but not good either. If he was a drop dead guy north of say 36%, he would have stuck because you can live with the other. Elmore (Keatts) was hurt and when he played was more of a stretch 4 guy that wasn't a factor down low on either end. Taylor (Keatts) is a shooter period and when he's not hitting, it's a problem because he wasn't seeing the floor and defense was spotty. Fornes( Keatts) had one on one break down ability plus could shoot but couldn't put it all together consistently on the offensive end and was beaten defensively often. Cylla had promise offensively but loved the perimeter too much with a low percentage and wasn't a defensive factor at this level.

Getting to now. Well, the guys that they have are good, but they need some players. Toews, Gadsden, Estime, Sims and Linssen is a good starting point when you go small. I don't see the ball sticking that much with that group and you have 3 guys on the perimeter (4 next year with Kai-shot presentation is excellent) that you have to account for that will space the floor. I'm very high on Sims because that kid is very solid period and we all know about Kai, Ty and Estime with what they can do. I think that Boggs will be very good as a bigger guy that can drive it and Dodd will definitely play immediately. The only need is to have a guy that can get his shot off the bounce besides Kai. Guys have to put in work in that regard or recruit it. That is something that is vital to have and is overlooked by many.

The front court is shallow right now and they need another guy. Both recruits are good, but are young and only one of them can man the 5, if need be. They need another WF as well and a PG/SG combo that is athletic that can drive it and defend. In short, they need at least 1-2 more bigs, a WF and at least one combo at a minimum. We shall see what happens. If they only have 10 ships going, they can give 1 to Brown to be the backup PG. He's pretty dog gone good and quick....I like him. They need to get things going soon...

This forecast/analysis is spot on. I couldn't have written it better myself and almost no points of contention in terms of players past and and those returning, as far as skill sets. Sims will be much better because he puts time in on his game and is hungry. Toews will shoot better with a summer playing with the National Team and increased confidence in his role as a leader seems probable. I smell chemistry. Good chemistry can pull you through short bouts of confidence loss as well as learning curves but if the ship is not built to sail the entire voyage then it won't be enough. The roster was good this past season as everyone had noted and it will be improved next. Guaranteed. The system and coaching are the keys. No excuses. Pivotal year for UNCW Basketball.

On a different note this is a VALPO guy that the team has been pursuing lately: http://www.valpoathletics.com/mbasketbal...e-sorolla/
