I would think you will be playing worse ball at the end of the year. (In theory) Your starters will be playing more, as you don't have depth built up. By the end of the year, while they may have a better grasp of the system and be able to execute it better, I figure your players will be worn down a bit and therefore the performance might not be too hot.
It's a mixed bag. I agree with your sentiment that anything above .500 is a great year for you guys, but I'd temper it and say 4+ wins is a solid first season.
Now, next year? You guys have your FBS recruiting class from this year primarily redshirted (I would imagine) will have a year in the weight room and a year in the system. So next year, you will have MUCH better depth, which puts you in a position to make a move.
Honestly, I get FBS players are overall bigger faster stronger but these are 18-22 year old guys for the most part this worn down stuff is way overblown. Plus we are not joining the SEC, no doubt it is step up but not cavernous. I used to get hammed boned in the Army with one hour to sleep get up go run five miles, do sit up, push ups, pull ups etc and work a 12 hour day all the time. Either folks forget how it was when they were young or were never really pushed hard when they were younger. We were playing our best ball at the end of last year as well. These upper classmen are used to playing in South Georgia they will be just fine at the end of the year. Injuries are injuries they happen at every level and probably more in practice than on the field.

I imagine if you don't practice on a field you'll get a few injuries.

Traditionally, we have been full contact, full pads, for our practices, even during the season. Most of our injuries the past 4 years have been due to practice, not the actual game.
They were hitting every single day 100%. We rarely, if ever, faced a team that was more conditioned or tougher than we were, but, often times, our guys were so banged up from beating each other up during the week, that the lineup on Saturday's could have been anyone's guess.
South Georgia heat. South Georgia humidity. Directly in the sunlight. Full contact. 90% run plays, smashmouth, line-up and beat the man in front of you football. Gonna miss it, but we needed a change.
I'm hoping a lighter practice with less contact will help prevent a lot of the injuries we have seen during the Monken era.
