NBC dumps 'under God' from Pledge at U.S. Open
NBC dumps 'under God' from Pledge at U.S. Open

NBC's opening of the U.S. Open Golf Championship today included two readings of the Pledge of Allegiance, but omitted the phrase "under God" both times.

The program commenced with children standing in a classroom setting, as they recited the "abbreviated" version of the Pledge, saying: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, with liberty and justice for all."

This debate seems to come up time and again. There are a couple things to consider...

First, "Under God" was added in the 1950s, some 50+ years after it was originally written. If we desire purity, then it makes the omission less 'offensive' as it wasn't even in the original composition to begin with.

Second, although I am Christian, I don't think those opposed to having a public school classroom stand up and recite "one nation under God" are being that unreasonable.

Yes, the version created by a Socialist, Baptist Minister was revised to add "god" at the height of the cold war to show disapproval with Communism. I'd rather it not be there, but just don't say that part of the pledge when I'm at my kids' school. I tell them that whether they choose to say it or not is their choice.

Don't we have bigger things to worry about than this? A private company decided to do something with an event that they spent their money to produce.

During the final round the commentators explained that it was editing that caused the controversy and apologized if anyone was offended.

It did not overly bother me. I understood it was editing.

Yawn. Private company, doing whatever a private company wants. Leave it to SOAF to speak out against it. Effing libtards and Obabba.

God is as American as Apple pie! 03-wink

(that was sarcasm.)

The whole thing is a bit ridiculous. It's a frickin' golf tournament with 72 of the 155 entrants from other countries. Hardly some national treasure deserving of military images and flag waving anyway.

They also edited out Indivisible, does that mean they want the liberal states to leave and join a more socialist nation? 05-stirthepot

It's was called the US Open, not the International Association of Friggin Liberals Open. I guess flying Old Glory would be out of the question in your view.

Yeah, it's not just any little ol' golf turny, it's the US Open. I expect to see flags at the British Open and any other sports national opens.

Why is it that Fo fizzle gets to declare a whole thread failed. Not the first time. Getting old. If you have nothing else to say, why present us with the fo fizzle drivel. We are adult enough to just QUIT f'cking posting, when we are done. Not you. Frankly, we don't want to hear it anyway. Its Like I give up I'm taking my Fo fizzle ball home. Spare us. You have nothing new to add, just STFU.

...and the fact that the pledge was invented by a Nazi and American school initially children saluted the flag using the "Roman Salute".
