It really doesn't matter to me if we go the D1/D2/D3/NAIA route. Just get the right guy. My feeling is if JMU can't afford (or maybe "won't" is the more operative word) to offer above $350K, then there are still guys out there who check a lot of boxes - e.g., head coaching experience, winning at high levels, proven abilities to recruit, prep and game management (X's and O's), etc.

As far as the pitch forks, it shouldn't matter where they are from (D1/D2/D3). The head coach should be given at least 2 years to get things going in a positive direction. The honeymoon comes to a close in year 3. Like you it appears, I hope we do put 500 grand out there and attract a candidate that will trump anything we've seen since the Lefthander. Not counting on it though. Having said that, if we are going to go cheaper, give me somebody who still checks the boxes regardless of what division.

Has JMU MBB ever had a head coach who has won a national title - or even sniffed it? Keener came close as an assistant at GT in the national title game in 2004. Lefty won 1 ACC tournament, but no Final 4 appearances (of course as a head coach). Dillard was an assistant at GT when they went to the Final 4 in 1990.
