CGH, my apologies for inferring that business meant "profit". A program like ours that finishes every year in the RED left Bass with few options. There is really NO money to be made. The travel stipend allowed us to put a hard cost on post season play with a "fixed" hit to the budget. On the other hand, $35K to host was too much of a risk, although we knew are potential downside.
I can see my friend Jimmy Bass telling Coach K to go out there and win one in Texas so we can easily sell $35k worth of tickets when Trask hosts round two. A Round 2 sell-out would definitely be revenue positive.
I've known Angela Lento and her husband Joe Dwyer for many years and their success does not surprise me. The business model is simple, they're both talented, hard-working, and Emmy award winners. I like their long term prospects serving the mid-major market.

RE: CIT/CBI
fun fact: Sam Houston State at 82 RPI is the highest ranked team in either the CBI or CIT. This would be big win for Coach K and a great momentum builder for next year.

Unless the CIT has upped the anti, it's $30k. And I still think we can cover that. And it doesn't increase by round. SHSU holds 1750, so they have to pitch in above and beyond ticket sales and concessions. On the other hand, if we lose tomorrow, it's all moot.

Thanks for clearing that up. After I sent the above and thought about it a little more, I figured you must have been talking about business aside from profits.
Hopefully, in a year or two we'll get to GREEN at the conclusion of our seasons. Would you by chance know if we finished in the green during our successful runs from 1998-2006?

RE: CIT/CBI
I was under the impression that our basketball team was profitable as an individual entity, but any profits go towards offseting the losses by other sports, thus making athletics as a whole a costly endeavor. The better the basketball team does, the more money there is for other sports.

That's exactly what I've always thought as well. However, with dwindling fans showing up in recent years (excluding this season of course) it wouldn't surprise me if they were in the red as well. Especially if you add in contract money still owed to previous coaches.

I was told we were actually in the black this year. Probably would have a lot to do with the money games at Louisville and Minnesota.

Sam Houston lost in the 2nd round at home to UL-Lafayette 71-70 on Saturday. ULL will now host Evansville in the quarterfinals tomorrow night.
