It was a narrow margin. Similar to vs Iowa last week. So ISU does not seem to be hurting too badly. Good win for the MAC.

They could only muster 7 points. Good win for the MAC, yes.

They could only muster seven points because our defense completely shut them down.

Yes I know. Their offense completely sucks. Rocco Becht should not be playing but he got thrown in because of the Hunter Dekkers debacle. ISU is looking at a 2 or 3 win season.

Happy with the win but if anyone thinks the level we are playing at right now will win the MAC, they aren't watching the same team.

I just watched the CC post-game interview and he is now finally saying that the pass game is not executing.

I like Austin Smith when he rolls out and becomes dual threat but he is not accurate on long throws and struggles in the pocket big time. CC even mentioned that they have to do a better job of putting him in better positions.

Guys, he is 41/74 for 403 yards with 2 TD and 2 int. in 3 games. 2 of those games were against an FCS school and UMass. The numbers don't cut it for a team with eyes set on a run to Detroit. I hope he turns it around but I think after 12 quarters it might be what it is.

The energy lacked, except at the end of the game and we had 10 penalties.

After 3 games, I can't say this team is near the top of the MAC. I hope I'm wrong and it finally clicks down in Florida next week but we will not be favored in that game and if we play like we have been playing we will begin MAC play 2-2

Jacksonville St is in Alabama! Completely agree regarding this team.......UMASS should've won today, they outplayed us, Smith has really struggled throwing the ball, and just understanding schemes being thrown at him! Evans needs the ball 20 times as well! We've a very winnable schedule so 8-4 still is very doable, but Toledo, Ohio U, Miami OH, are all much better! The MAC West is down.though! Our defense needs the offense to help them out going forward. Good analysis Steve

Fair point on the offensive performance of ISU.

Miami just beat Cincinnati now of the Big12 in double overtime. So two impressive wins for the MAC today!!

Ah yes, thank you Glory Days. I don't know why I was thinking Florida. lol my bad. The bottom line is that the coaching staff needs to put him in more roll-out situations where he can use running back or Tight end as a pass option or he can run. I like Austin but in the pocket it's been objectively not working. If we want to go to Detroit, the existing game plans will under no circumstance get us there.

Why do we go long stretches without Samson Evans? UMass could not stop him (8 carries, 89 yards, 11.1 avg.) Don Brown had to be ecstatic that Samson was on the sideline next to CC most of the game. He wasn't injured. I know Creighton is a nice guy but when you have an inaccurate QB but a John Riggins prototype at RB, give him the rock, control the clock. Jaylon Jackson is the perfect complement (12-83, 6.9 avg), but I'm riding my best player.

RE: Game Day U Mass at EMU September 16
My comments from the game yesterday. First the concessions were better organized. Second we are getting attendance I mean real attendance, folks at the game. Over 16,000. Those flash sale tickets at $15 a piece are working. Yes I was curious as to why Samson Evans wasn't playing more, we got a lot of rushing yards on only a few real big plays. I am not impressed with the offensive line in terms of pass protection and dominating in terms of a consistent running game that generates 3-4 yards on first and second down. Smith continues to be the goat for WRs that can't separate and get open or catch the ball when wide open (that's you Max Reese). Let me say this about Austin and those of you wondering why he's out there. That 50 yard scramble game winning pass? Taylor Powell couldn't have done that. It was because Austin is a pure athlete and if he ever reaches to his full potential he's going to be a great one. The game was a repeat of the Howard experience did either team look like they wanted to win? I think the big news of the season so far is the defense-3 sacks yesterday, 3 interceptions and a fumble return-we had a great positive turnover ratio yesterday and we won because of the defense generating them. The secondary was shuffled once again which shows you how deep that position is. Look at the different starting combos at DB. And our defensive line is playing without Merritt, Haney and Carter Evans. YES clean up the blank bland stupid penalties we have suffered through 3 games now. YES our kicking game is awesome but please get the kickoffs more in the end zone. The game yesterday was equal parts frustration and exciting. And we won and it was a beautiful weather day with classic cars and bands. Miss you Super.

Great post Steve. Coach Creighton acknowledged the passing game needs a lot of work. Hopefully some new wrinkles and tweaks make it much more productive because the current state production would probably earn us a 0.500 record.

I have heard coach Creighton remind everyone that it takes two QBs to win in football and yet this season we have only seen Smith. Why???

Austin Smith made a huge play for the game winner. Taylor Powell couldn't have made that throw BUT Taylor Powell wouldn't have NEEDED to make that throw. We are not bereft in the passing game. Knue is great, Paaske and Getzinger are big targets, both Evans and Jackson can catch and get YAC, and Hamze El-Zayat is a real weapon out there. I like the gifts Smith brings to the table but he really needs to manage the game better if we are going to win it all. And yes, that is still the goal.

Side note: As I review the roster, we have a ton of players from Georgia. Who is the staff member pulling in all these Georgia players? He needs a raise, impressive pipeline.

Bob our WRs outside of Knue are not getting good separation from the coverage on most plays. And the number of dropped balls is frustrating at least 2 to 4 per game. We miss Drummond and Hoss.

Luck, I'm with you. I'm not sure why McCoy can't be utilized for a series or 2 to give us a shot in the arm. I've heard he made serious strides as a thrower and it's confirmed he is a very good athlete. I wonder if the lack of production continues if this becomes a serious option

Why???

Luck, I'm with you. I'm not sure why McCoy can't be utilized for a series or 2 to give us a shot in the arm. I've heard he made serious strides as a thrower and it's confirmed he is a very good athlete. I wonder if the lack of production continues if this becomes a serious option

Guys I am just wondering... Last year when Smith was starting, Coach was calling a lot of QB draws, designed runs and option plays. The playbook this season is similar to having Roback, Bryant, Wiegers and Powell taking snaps. Why?

I remember bitching that Roback NEVER ran even when he had a ton of room to do so. When he broke his leg in his last game, I realized why. Our number two QB was not of D1 quality, had Brogan been hurt earlier, we probably would not have won another game. Smith got hurt last year, but we had Powell ready to take over. I'm thinking that Cam'Ron and Ike may just not be ready. My take only.

These players did not dress and I was counting on each of them making big contributions this year.

-CB Joshua Scott - not dressed
-DE Mikey Haney - not dressed
-DT Alex Merritt - not dressed
-DE Sterling Miles - not dressed
-DT Ugo Nosike - not dressed
-Carter Evan’s - out for the season

And I could have sworn I saw DT Malik Tullis or Melvin Swindle in the stands or do I have bad eyesight?
