deGrom signs with the Rangers. 5 years, $185M, option for 6th year. Full no trade. It’s signed, already passed the physical.

As a Rangers fan I did not see this coming. Holy crap.

Question RE: 2022-23 mlb Hot Stove (offseason) Thread
Crime Dog gets the unanimous call to Cooperstown! Congrats!!

Quote:Though McGriff went 16-for-16, none of the other men on the Contemporary Baseball Era ballot -- a ballot comprised of players whose greatest contributions to the game came from 1980 to the present -- received the 12 votes (or 75%) necessary for selection. The results revealed by the Hall were as follows:

McGriff: 16 votes, 100%
Don Mattingly, 8, 50%
Curt Schilling, 7, 43.8%
Dale Murphy, 6, 37.5%
Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Rafael Palmeiro: Fewer than 4 votes

Both Mattingly and Schilling should get next-tremendous competitors. The bottom 4: Never, as it should be.

They're gonna be tough now that they're confident, and still hungry for a title.

To me its an easier argument to make if you're not a playoff team and you need to figure out how to get over that hump. But for a team that was just in the WS and needs that extra post-season engine to win it all, it's an awful lot to pay for a guy with a playoff wRC+ of 62.

Thing that stuck out to me was 11 years with full no-trade clause. That screams albatross. Gonna be interesting to see him at ages 38-39-40 at short?

Question RE: 2022-23 mlb Hot Stove (offseason) Thread
I'm not sure Braves will sign Swanson now with all th crazy money flowing. Braves usually are more smart/value focused. (Ozuna obviously a recent detour). If not, just go with Grissom/Arcia for now and see how it works out. Then maybe look in July and next offseason if need be. Hate to see Swanson go (and he still might not) but it's getting harder to see it after yesterday.

His agent was discussing moving him to 3rd at some point - by that age, Machado may be gone. Also, DHing (or rotating that with Machado) is possible.

Wrong player/team. Turner at 3rd is certainly a possibility but his offense, which is so reliant on speed, will be at risk in the last 5+ years of this contract (sorry - Sarris tweet notwithstanding Turner's game really does leverage his speed to a high degree). Defense as well, perhaps to a lesser degree. DH works but again, he's going to have to adapt.

Now, re Bogaerts, similar contract duration issue but he's a year older. On the other hand he's much less reliant on speed. And his defense is below average already so my guess is that DH is a much more viable role for him late in this contract.

The more important question, of course, is who the hell is gonna play SS for the Dodgers??? The only elite FA left is...03-puke... Correa. And Swanson, well, we're hearing nothing on him around here.

Including my own. Lots of (credible) chatter that Friedman is avoiding Correa for fear of serious fan blowback.
