Yep top two teams were extraordinary with a 3 and 1 record. The rest of the SEC was an abysmal 3 and 7.
In fairness, the rest of the SEC faced a lot of opt-outs and transfers, which the top two teams didn't.
It's kind of ironic, but SEC teams that do not make the playoffs are likely to face a lot more problems in the lesser bowls, precisely because they have more talent, hence more guys who are likely to opt out rather than play a minor bowl, or will see greener pastures in the transfer portal.
IIRC, LSU only had like 38 scholarship players for its bowl game vs Kansas State.

Good points. Lessor bowls make it hard to judge for other reasons as well, including the healing of key injured players due to time difference last game played, coaching staff preparation/planning for one team, etc. It is my belief that Saban clearly out-coached Fickell in that game.
That said, the teams that the SEC teams face in the lessor bowls often get their coach and/or coaching staff raided by the more desirable landing spots/more money, with the success that they achieved the current year.
