UVU looks very tough. And they are. But like us I feel they can be inconsistent as well. Beating BYU one week and then losing to SUU the next. GCU, CBU, Seattle, SFA, and ACU have all been good at times but have also dropped some games I think they should have won. The rest are struggling to get their legs under them. WAC play starts soon. Who’s going to emerge as top dawg this year?

NMSU is the top team at this point. We have the wins to back it up.

Not sure what games ACU dropped that they should have won. Utah was very strong and Texas A&M took two overtimes to barely win. Other than that, the Wildcats have won every game. I was very disappointed we did not pull out the win against Texas A&M, but it was oh so close to being another victory most would not have given the team a chance of winning. So far, other than the first game of the season when the new guys had not yet played with the intensity the team brings, ACU has performed as expected. The win against CSB was a good one since they had beaten Boise State and won three in a row.
Now as the conference gets closer, the new guys have gotten in some good playing time so we shall see if they can perform against WAC level competition. I figure win or lose, the team will play with great energy -- their trademark.

Good assessment. UVU did lose to Southern Utah, but thats a solid team (NET around 115). GCU, CBU, and Seattle have won lots of easy games, and not won many that impress. Close losses aside, UVU NMSU have good wins under their belts. There will be some surprise losses by top teams, but I still see the Aggies, UVU and GCU being the teams.to beat. UVU and GCU were each competitive in their games against Wyo (NET 25 or so) and have convinced me that can turn it up a notch when needed.

You are correct, I didn’t mean to say ACU lost games they shouldn’t have. I’ll be honest I still have trouble keeping all the Texas schools and who they e played straight in my head. I think ACU could be one of the top 3 when it’s all said and done. I’m thinking the top 1-3 spots will be separated by very few games at the end of the season.

Looks like Chicago State has good young head coach. This the best Chicago State has done since they first joined the WAC.

I agree. If he can simply get the program back to where it was in its final Great West year or its first year in the WAC, that will be a nice accomplishment. I can't imagine them going .500 in the conference this year like they did their first year in the WAC, but if they can get a few conference home wins, and maybe pick up a road win or 2, it will be a solid season for Gillion.

2013-14 (first WAC season) is the last time they were averaging 1,000+ fans at home as well. But more people show up when you are in top half of the conference... Getting fans back in will come with wins.

I have trouble keeping up as well. It will take time to figure out the various schools and their strong points. One thing I am pretty sure about is NMSU should be ranked at the head of the class in WAC basketball. What I don't know is how all the rest should stack up. ACU can play surprisingly good basketball, but we don't know the WAC yet. I am hoping for a strong conference, so all the teams are lifted up with better competition. We will be back in a very nice renovation called Moody Coliseum next year and the hope is to be a force in the WAC and beyond. Moody will be quite impressive.04-cheers

To be honest, I have my concerns with how NMSU will match up with some of the guard strong WAC teams. Right now, the weak link in the Aggies roster is the point guard position. Nate Pryor has played better than Mario McKinney but both have had moments where they have unraveled against opposing defenses. Pryor sometimes makes ill advised weak passes. And, McKinney over dibbles and gets out of control attacking the rim. Neither player is particularly skilled offensively. Pryor is craft around the basket whereas McKinney is ultra-athletic but shows little touch around the rim. Right now, more than half the point guards in the WAC are more skilled as shooters and passer than NMSU's PGs.

I keep seeing Davidson ranked ahead of NMSU in all these mid major polls. What gives?

The perception for the strength of the conference. The A-10 versus WAC.

Plus the bad loss against UNM really hurt us. Davidson's only other loss was against San Francisco, otherwise we'd be ahead of them.

So I’m watching the Tarleton game. Just checking it out. And I just saw the most unbelievable, over exaggerated flop I’ve ever seen. That Tarleton dude reacted like he got hit by a bus lol

Outstanding win for Tarleton despite that. South Alabama was NET 79 and had an 8 win streak coming in.

Also UTRGV 68 UTSA 50. Not as impressive as what Tarleton did but we needed it bad.

Congrats on the RGV road win!

UVU also picked up a ~40 point home win against a lower level opponent.

Very strong performance by the Texans. South Alabama played hard but the Texans were tough as nails. SA did have an amazing player, a transfer from Texas A&M but he was too much of a one man show. Tarleton played team basketball much better.
