I figured you were just using Google. You don't have to try to convince me. I'm from [the real] South Florida. More power to Tampa if they want to slap salami onto the sandwich and claim that it originated there but I guarantee you that nowhere in Cuba, Key West, or Miami will put Salami in a Cuban sandwich.

From an actual historian:

Quote:Some believe that the sandwich was a common lunch food for workers in both the cigar factories and sugar mills of Cuba (especially in big cities such as Havana or Santiago de Cuba) and the cigar factories of Key West by the 1860s. Historian Loy Glenn Westfall states that the sandwich was "born in Cuba and educated in Key West."

The cigar industry in Florida shifted to Tampa in the mid-1880s, and tens of thousands of Cuban workers moved to the area over the next decade.

Like I said, it was in Key West in its original form decades before it made it to Tampa and the ingredients were changed.

It's just marketing. Tampa claiming the Cuban sandwich is no different than the restaurants and towns across the country claiming other popular dishes/beverages.

Some believe the Earth is flat too.

"The first recorded mentions of a distinct Cuban sandwich survive in descriptions of workers' cafés in Ybor City and West Tampa from around 1900, leading other historians to theorize that the sandwich as now constituted first appeared there."

Oh what's that? Actual evidence? Run along...

I think this guy nailed it.

I did not grow up with Skyline/Cincy style chili and only ate it after moving to Cincinnati. While I grown to like it, it was not instantaneous. Only after numerous times eating it after drinking did I ever start to appreciate it.

I've heard that the Skylines in Florida are The Suck. I think the issue is that Skyline is misbranded. It shouldn't be called chili. It should be called sauce.

This.

I have had Skyline in Cincy before. Its ok. Sits kinda heavy afterwards. A solid 6 out of 10.

However.....it is not chili. I think every Texan on this board can agree with this. It's just an extra meaty meat sauce for spaghetti.

The Cuban sandwich was not invented in Tampa. It came from Cuba. Tampa just falsely claims it invented it. This has nothing to do with the cows and I have no stake in the fight. My Cuban friends are highly insulted whenever someone claims the sandwich came from Tampa. The Tampa version also includes salami and often mayo which no self respecting Cuban would recognize as a Cuban sandwich. Miami also claims the sandwich, but Miami just popularized the traditional/classic version Cuban sandwich.

I think most Cincinnatians agree it is a different food than chili you would find else. People here do eat both forms of chili (as well as white chicken chili and other styles).

As I posted earlier, if and when you come to Cincinnati don't seek out Skyline/Goldstar or Frisch's because it is fast food. There are plenty of better eating options.

Edit: For those interested, here are some pretty good options. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=...-_8BwLUzPK

Oh your Cuban friends, how old were they in 1890?

Also, why would they be highly insulted over the origins of a sandwich? Your friends are ******* weird.

This was an ongoing struggle between some of my Orlando friends and Miami friends arguing where the Cuban sandwich was first introduced. After doing some research and actually talking with a PhD historian that did his research on Ybor history, I'm pretty convinced where the Cuban sandwich came from but feel free to disagree. I would highly suggest that you visit the Ybor history museum sometime because it's extremely interesting and you may find the same gentleman that I spoke with there.

Your friends may disagree and be insulted but I think that I would rather side with historians on this one.

PS All of my Cuban friends don't give a Cincinnati Chili about where the Cuban sandwich originated from.

Yup. No reason to eat chunky chunks on spaghetti when you could get some really good food in a surprisingly good food city.

It’s too much common sense for them to comprehend.

RE: AAC Football Teams as Wendy's Menu Items
Several years ago, I worked an six weeks assignment in the Cincy suburb of Hamilton. Discovered some underrated gems including...
Richard's Pizza near downtown Hamilton for their steak sandwich.
Montgomery Inn for ribs
LaRosa's Italian
Graeter's for ice cream
... also when getting gas, milk shakes at United Dairy Farmers

But like Memphis has nasty Krystal, they have the equally grotesque White Castle.

Memphis- The Coke Freestyle machine is a fantastic invention. You can make so many great flavors with it. This machine should be the best thing in the restaurant. Unfortunately, you know when you put your cup under the dispenser and it’s time to make your big move, you’ll just blow it and get Cherry Coke.

Definitely a callout to our 2008 NC game breakdown03-hissyfit[/i]

What could possibly go wrong?

(my personal favorite - "UConn left to join the Friendly's menu")

USFFan

I feel that the writer missed the mark on UConn since Friendly's is a chain restaurant and we are going Independent (this is a football specific article and not an Olympic one).

UConn football has got to be Bacon Jalapeno Mac and Cheese at an independently owned eatery.

UConn football definitely belongs on this Independent Eatery menu:

I am pretty sure that Chum Chili is still better than chili from Cincinnati.
