Agree that you turn off non-stem people with Tech in the name. But I don't think it would've mattered since the natty. The school has all the exposure and prestige it would've with any name.

Glad the Temple name didn't change when it became a state supported school. It's the furthest thing from a parochial school now, but people who aren't familiar sometimes ask if I went to a Jewish school. I guess the fact that it didn't become a state school eliminated options like Philadelphia State or East Penn State. Thank God.

When UCF changed their name from FTU...UCF had an enrollment of just 11,000 with limited undergrad and grad majors.

Now...UCF has over 67,000 students and is opening up their new joint downtown campus this Fall for 7,000 students.

UCF's depth and scope of offerings (like their Medical School) may have never happened if they stuck to their ridged "Tech" start.

They only drew 5,811 for the Cusa championship game.

The school was originally named UFO.

Ironically championship games are oftentimes less well attended. This is because most people plan their game days much farther out and the participants in the championship might not be decided until a week prior.

What's the big deal? Everybody just knows them as "UCF" anyway.

So they change to Florida Tech... and just become known as "FTU".

For the record, they were never Florida Tech. UCF was Florida Technological University but the University known as "Florida Tech" was Florida Institute of Technology (My other alma mater... did my post graduate work there).

Its FITs sports teams that use the "Florida Tech" label.

I like Orlando U....It fits the conference with Houston, Memphis, Cincinnati & Tulsa. Seems like there's a bias against the 'Centrals' which is why Central Florida really wants everyone to call them UCF.

Florida Technological University was established before Brevard Engineering College changed their name to Florida Institute of Technology.
