Wasn’t USF the University of Tampa at one point?
Was there a mascot change there, too?

Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech

This made me think. For me Virginia Tech kind of came out of nowhere in the football scene then one day I realized they were the team the host of the college scoreboard show would call VPI and whose score came right after the Slippery Rock game. The college football landscape has certainly changed since I was young. Other than a couple of traditional big names ABC used to treat everyone pretty much the same on the show they had after the game of the week.

No. USF has always been U of South Florida, and U of Tampa has (almost) always been U of Tampa.

Crazy but probably true.
Waiting for the SEC to pick up “Louisiana” and Florida A&M any minute now.

The Legislature was never investing in FTU/UCF, or really any of our universities except UF/FSU, that would enable us to reach the quality of those universities. Florida's universities have built into very strong institutions through enrollment size (tuition dollars and economies of scale). Had FTU remained a smaller campus, it would be much more like Louisiana Tech or Tennessee Tech. Only UCF's size, achieved through offering comprehensive programs, has enabled us to build to what we are today.
While we could have kept the Tech name and still offered comprehensive programs, the leadership at the time felt the Tech name was limiting. Too bad, because I definitely agree that we'd be better off with the Tech name right now.
USF's push for more recognition under genshaft helped too. USF academically is every bit the equal of FSU despite a weaker student profile.
It most certainly has helped UCF and will lift the rest of the state schools going forward.

I don't really feel like starting a pissing match, but no, USF is not equal to FSU. FSU does as much research as USF while getting basically nothing from its med school. USF lives and dies by the medical school and having had one for so much longer than FSU and UCF. FSU is much broader and deeper across almost every department except medicine and engineering. If FSU had a full research medical school and its own engineering school, it would be an AAU school.

They built Disney in Orlando and they felt UCF invited more Business/Hospitality students than Florida Tech.

Florida Tech is now taken. My grad school alma mater thanks the Orlando based University for its bequest.

I don’t see any problem with the name University of Central Florida. After all, this type of naming convention hasn’t hurt the University of Southern Florida*.

I feel bad for Middle Tennessee State it’s probably the worst FBS name.
