He has been gift wrapped the best D he has ever worked with.

Of he has a bad year in 19 there won't be a 2020 for him.

I'm not worried about that at this time though.

I'll say this much...

I wasn't impressed with how he schemed against our offense in 2014 or 2016. In the latter game you have to keep in mind it was a Tyson Summers-coached team.

Ted Roof has held up a crystal football as DC, the position he has been hired for.

We all had as feeling it would be him, if he can't shut people down regularly with the returning talent he gets on that side of the ball he won't be working here too long.

People here questioned the hire of Nate Woody and switch to the 3-4 awhile back though, look how that turned out.

You Appy folks know darn well why Auburn was able to win a title that year.

I don't think it's nearly as bad of a hire as some people are making it out to be. Roof has been really good before.

at Minnesota:
2008: 5.71 ypp allowed (#89) <- Note: 2007 Minnesota allowed 6.82 (#120)

at Auburn:
2009: 5.15 (#43) <- Note: 2008 Auburn allowed 4.91 (#33)
2010: 5.36 (#56)
2011: 5.73 (#80)

at Penn State:
2012: 4.90 (#22) <- Note: 2011 Penn State allowed 4.64 (#11)

at GT:
2013: 5.52 (#64) <- Note: 2012 GT allowed 5.69 (#74)
2014: 6.32 (#111)
2015: 5.82 (#91)
2016: 5.76 (#68)
2017: 5.52 (#57)

Anything prior to his Duke HC stint (03-07) is prior to the proliferation of the spread and is irrelevant in modern college football.

There's been no word yet about Coach Gasparato. If he's kept, along with Coach Smith who did stay with App for 2019, then I see the 3-4 Defense being kept with some Tampa 2 thrown in the mix. That could be killer in the Sun Belt.

This is very troubling if true. Our defense has been in top 30 the past 4 years with the 3-4, and we're looking at a guy that has run a 4-3 most if not all of his career?

I don't know why App would hire a guy whose coached nothing but 4-3 Cover 2 defense for his entire career to run a top 10 defense that has run nothing but 3-4 the last few years, and returns what, 7 or 8 starters next year?

Risky.

Cam Newton isn't coming to Boone. Or indeed anywhere else on the map Roof has coached as a DC not named "Auburn".

There's nothing wrong with running a 4-3 if you are built for it. Lots of teams win with a 4-3 I know we did for a long time. Personally I've always liked the 4-2-5 but I have no real complaints about the 3-4 we are currently running. Better to let the coach run what he knows than try to fit a square peg in a round hole.

RE: App State hires Ted Roof as DC
I thought we did pretty good with the 4-3 for a long time...

I'm very familiar with his time at Georgia Tech as a player and coach for both of his stints. His career trajectory has been on a downward spiral for some time. The only reason he hoisted a trophy with Auburn is because the offense was insane that year. Pretty sure that as because of Cam Newton. His 3rd down stops were non existent. If I'm App State, I'd be seriously deflated about this hire. Not saying that to irk App State - as a GS fan I don't hate App State, that's reserved for Georgia State... From what I've seen an experienced, he's a mediocre DC with good connections to stay employed. Who knows, maybe he works out well for you guys.

RE: App State hires Ted Roof as DC
Seems like his second stint at GT his squad got better each year the last 3 years. Saying he's going to change up the scheme is all guessing right now. Might as well add more guesses what could happen on the team:

- Ted Roof will be Co-DC
- Coach Gasparato stays on as Co-DC and play caller.
- The 3-4 stays
- Roof is there to be an experienced voice for Coach Drink while he gets his first year as HC under his belt.

2011: 5.45 (#72) FCS
2012: 6.07 (#100) FCS
2013: 5.76 (#90) FCS <- Woody hired here

2016: 4.99 (#19) FBS
2017: 5.31 (#44) FBS
