Monty's MAC wins by year: 3,3,8,8,9,7,5 (1 game left). Anyone see a trend here?

Monty doesn't need thanks for his effort. He's been paid handsomly and had a great opportunity to be a NCAA head coach. He's awful. STF is no better. He's done as little as Monty.
^^^^this. I’ve personally grown tired of STF’s leadership. State budget or not adapt and overcome. Develope new revenue streams (granted they are trying with Convo naming rights). Better communication. Web based coaches shows. Think outside the box. Hell I don’t know and maybe the entire athletic department hasn’t a clue either.

I agree the whole department sucks. For a school with a reputable marketing college, they suck at marketing their teams. The new logo is cartoonish and for fu,cks sake can we get on the same page and push "NIU" not northern Illinois.
Yes, I've mentioned that before. The definition of ironic.
I was a marketing major/sales program (that is highly recognized in the nation) and I was always surprised that they never had Athletics come in and try to do something together with the marketing students as a project during a class OR offer it up to the sales program a few students to "intern" in the athletic dept to push sales of season tickets, group sales or HASF. Instead we are stuck dealing with a lot of no responses on ticket inquiries (lost sales) or people that are clueless dealing with sales.

Yep. I called the ticket office a while ago to buy 2 tickets to a basketball game for guests we were bringing. No one answered the phone and it was during prime business hours. I was not about to leave a message and wait for a return call. So, I ended up purchasing the tickets on Ticketmaster and it cost me TWICE as much with service charges/fees.

Sounds like a seasonal mom and pop shop. Basketball is not one of the seasons....

Toledo’s current coach was hired one season before NIU’s current coach. In his first season Toledo was 4 - 28 and 1 - 15 in MAC play. He has since posted three 20+ win seasons along with three MAC West titles. Toledo is also about to make the post season for a fourth time since he took over. Two programs that basically started in the same place and are moving in different directions. He built a winner at Green Bay and is doing the same thing at Toledo. Hire someone that has experience building programs. There are a bunch of these guys out there and it won’t take eight years to get it running the right way.

I almost never see anything for NIU within 30 minutes of campus but continually see ads for other MAC schools. NIU has almost no presence right now in its own backyard. Sending out a couple tweets to a 100 fans on game day is not marketing. I think it is an athletics and university issue.
Thank you for this post. I was telling someone that I've seen billboards in different suburban areas for Bowling Green, Miami, Western Michigan, and Ball State, but was told it was my imagination.
All of those plus Eastern Illinois.

He will be gone soon I am sure...life in the MAC....If you are a good coach you move on...if you are bad coach you get fired...unless you coach at NIU

If it's any consolation for some of you, the ladies beat Toledo tonight, 89-79.

If you think that is impressive, you should post what Toledo's womens coach has done, way more impressive. Because they win and are fun to watch. The ladies for years get about 4,000 fans at every home game, just about 1,000 less fans then the men average. That is top 25 in the NCAA every single year. And the athletic department does fun stuff at lots of games to attract casual fans that are looking for more then just the game, like craft beer night, wine and cheese night, etc

Not impressed with the teams that have followed the NIT Championship.
They have failed to build upon that success. Recruiting has been mediocre.
Have seen a number of MAC teams with better talent and better fundamentals.
Yes the attendance is impressive and marketed well.

Great win for the women. Get a sweep this week and carry that momentum into the conf tourney. Home tourney game on Monday I would think?

Yes, they clinched a home tourney game this Monday (most likely at 6:00 pm). Athletics did something nice for us season ticketholders, giving us free tickets for the game at our season ticket location.

Anything looks impressive compared to the "improvement" we've made.
On the women's side, I thought they acquitted themselves very well this year especially considering the injuries and the relatively tough MAC this year.
