Who on this board knows coaching?
Also, anyone that knows coaching knows that Tubby Smith is not the type of coach that is going to be a one-year-fix. He is generally a coach that comes in when a program is in the rubble and rebuilds the program. In pretty much every job he's had, he has left the program in a much better position than when he arrived.
While the players leaving at Memphis are concerning, the Tigers have the perfect coach that will be able to rebuild this team in his image. And the Tigers will be a NCAA Tournament team by the time that he leaves. To expect him to be an immediate program changer was asinine on Memphis fan's part. But give him a few years and the man will turn Memphis into a solid program again.

RE: Who on this board knows coaching?
You're saying we should look forward to how the team will play the season after Tubby leaves? Yes, I agree!
But for different reasons.
You contend that he rebuilds programs to be contenders when he leaves. Okay, so if that's true, then, how was Minnesota's record the year after Tubby left, or Texas Tech's, the next season after he left?
Minnesota didn't get an NCAA bid. Yes, they got a bid to the NIT, and ended up exceeding expectations by beating such power-houses as High Point and Saint Mary's, to win the tournament that no one watches. Then, the next year year, they finished 18-15, and received neither an NCAA bid, NOR an NIT bid.
How about Texas Tech? How did they do last year (after Tubby rebuilt the program)? Last year, they finished 18-14 and didn't get an NCAA or NIT bid.
Sounds to me like the odds are in favor that Tubby will leave Memphis' program (whenever he leaves), at BEST, about in the same shape as it was, when he arrived.
You say we should look forward to the "shape" he'll have left it in when Tubby leaves. I say we should look forward to Tubby's leaving, too, BUT ONLY so that Memphis can finally hire someone to move the program FORWARD.

My father was a coach and I've grown up around it and even scouted players back in the 90s for my local junior college.Recruiting and presenting young men an image they are attracted to and want to play for is the lifeblood of today's top programs.Tubby has clearly proven over the past 10-15 years he feels his past is proof enough and doesn't have or need to sell anything to a recruit. He is not and will not be the answer for a return to prominence... only a continued period of ho hum.

RE: Who on this board knows coaching?
I don't believe for one second that Rudd, Bowen, and the boosters brought Tubby in and paid him a 15.2mil contract for a slow rebuild. I am sure there are more people disappointed with how Tubby is playing his hand than just posters on this board. Heck, even the few times Tubby has had press conferences he has said he was disappointed in how things are going (not in those exact words). His hiring press conferences he was talking about conference and even NATIONAL championships during his time here at Memphis. Let's not try and spin it into some slow, methodical barely scratching the NCAA rebuild process. That is not why Tubby was hired.

We just need some patience. I'm not going to freak out over one bad season. If it continues then I will be concerned.

The problem with that statement is it is not about "one bad season". There are so many red flags waving now it should be very concerning. At this pointt here really is nothing solid anyone can point to and say "hey, but look at what he is doing here". In every aspect of his job he so far been less than average. The only hope we are hearing are people saying have hope, be patient, let's see. None of that fills most people with any confidence. When you look at a message board or call-in radio shows you are hearing people who are really invested in the program. If you just take a stroll around Memphis and talk to casual fans and ask them their opinions, they really don't care and have no faith at all in the current coaching staff. That is a real issue that this coaching staff doesn't care about at all.

People can be any way they want about this situation. He's already given me reason for concern...just the things he has done here.

Did I miss something? Has the 2017-2018 season already been played?

RE: Who on this board knows coaching?
At this point, Tubby has his guys.
He's needs to coach them up so that we can be that "really good team" he described.
Nothing left to do but let it play out.
Let's hope we stick to "Ten Loss" Tubby and don't become "Ten Win" Tubby.

From what I see, this forum is filled with wanna be coaches, athletic directors, school presidents and board of regent members.

Welcome to sports message boards. Feel free to check out every other team board on this site and see things almost identical.

We are all good at everything on this board. Except spelling. And grammar. Pretty spotty on those most of the time. But experts in all other regards.

Yep. I don't have to be a coach to see good or bad. I don't know how to build a car but I knew a Yugo was a bad car.

RE: Who on this board knows coaching?
I saw some good coaching..and some not so good coaching
If the Lawsons quit on him, why did he keep starting them game after game?
Why did we continually pass the ball around till the last second?
I don't think the players were the only people involved in our collapse. Looked to me that Tubby ran outta steam in the last part of the season too.
I'm just looking at what we saw happen last season. I know that we are now blaming the Lawsons and their dad, but that's not working for me.. yet.

Why was Pastner hired? Talk about a slow, methodical process that reverted the program back to even further irrelevance.
