Notre Dame backed out of numerous games with the OBE teams or made ridiculous demands for where games were played. Notre Dame has never been a good conference mate.
First, ND and BYU are not conference mates. So, thread hijack attempt there.
Second, ND did not "back out of numerous games with the OBE teams"...so you are just making stuff up.
Third, the "ridiculous demands" were part of OOC scheduling, not conference scheduling and are called "negotiations". ND football was not a "conference mate" with the OBE football schools, at all.
Fourth, any conference would take ND in a second, including the Big 12, who tried to snag ND for the same or similar deal which ND ended up signing with the ACC.
So, "good conference mate" or not, nobody would refuse ND's call right this minute for conference membership. Nobody.
How do I know?
1) Big East (partial)
2) ACC (partial)
3) Hockey East
4) Big Ten (hockey)
....the Big Ten chased after ND for full membership for decades.
...and the Big 12 tried mightily to get ND as a partial member, sort of what it had with the OBE.....
....half of those OBE schools ended up "conference mates" (whatever that is--drinking buddies, or something?) with ND in the ACC and seem good with it.
Conference realignment has reinforced my belief that conferences are temporary business arrangements (not some Holy Alliance) to keep or discard when the money is right. Am I wrong about that?
(Who else was on that Big East expansion committee---and do you know that Pitt and Syracuse left the Big East for the ACC before ND did??)
Look, I know you dislike ND and love to take shots at it whenever possible, but your post was long on emotion and short on facts.
