The COACHES most certainly take every game seriously, but a bunch of teenagers who most certainly think they are superior to their opponent in every way are not normally as mentally focused during practice as they would be against a heated rival or conference opponent. Disagree all you wan't but I've been in their shoes (albeit on a much smaller scale) and I know what it's like. And there comes a time mid game where the team is putting up more of a fight than you anticipated and suddenly your focus and effort goes up a notch.
Whether you like it or not A win against Auburn in the Iron Bowl is infinitely more important than whether or not they beat us by 7 or by 37. The "we are only focused on this week" is some of the oldest coach speak in the book, IMO. The coaches themselves may be trying to prep the team for that week, but they know good and well their players are distracted.
Edit: Idaho scored more points on Auburn last season than UGA, Louisville, MSST, SJSU, UK, Ole Miss, T A&M, and Alabama.
Ga State scored more points on Oregon than Colorado, Washington, and tied with Cal and Stanford.
I guess we are to assume then that both Idaho and Ga State are better offensively than all of those teams, because if both Auburn and Oregon gave the same amount of effort through 4 quarters in both games as they did against their other opponents then thats the only conclusion you can draw.
If you're the coach, it's your job to not get the team complacent against weaker opponents. I've seen us come out swinging very early consistently against weak opponents with Paul Johnson and Jeff Monken coaching. Alabama for the most part does the same thing with their weakest opponents. No good coach allows players to slack off just because it's the week of the cupcake game.
No coach period can completely control the minds of over 100 college guys at any given time. No way in hell Saban or Meyer can convince his team to tune into practice for 3-7 Idaho from the Sun Belt the same way they do for 10-1 #2 Alabama a week later. And I can almost guarantee you during Iron Bowl week they are in the screening rooms watching extra film. I'm going to doubt they are doing that for Idaho (sorry Idaho).
Sorry to highjack the thread. I'm done. GO SBC!
Any college football handicapper will attest to the fact you'll make money by taking the unheralded underdog plus the points at a team who'll be playing their biggest rivalry game the following week. They cover much more often than they don't.

In other news. Looks like App and GS made it to the top half of this list. (not that it means anything)

Just one small detail. 7-6 + 9-4 = 16-10
Yeah, I put the wrong numbers together on that one.

Just one? Check your math on the App St record too.
Just for clarity:
That final column should have read:
TEAM TOTAL
A-State 16-10 (13-3)
App 18-7 (13-3)
GS 18-7 (14-2)
Anybody else think this list looks upside down?

Probably but without context of opponents it does not say as much.

I'm sure ArkSt and GS would have loved to have had APPs out of conference schedule from 2015.

Eleven wins is something to crow about and number of wins grabs attention outside the G5 fan bases. It is a smart way to schedule. Within the league though you cannot compare overall records when the OOCs are so different. I think GS had a schedule comparable to us out of conference the last two years. App eased into it a little more but that turned out to be a great move.
We have played Miami, USC, Utah State, Tennessee, Missouri, Toledo and a solid Montana State program over two seasons. Missouri State was the only breather.

P5 = what a great season! Dynasty!
G5 = err weak conference schedule. Do it again!

3 MAC teams in the top 50 but an 11-2 Sun Belt team returning 17 starters is out of the top 50?

And, to be totally fair (makes me a bit sick, I admit), another Sun Belt team that beat the crap out of the MAC champ in their bowl game also on the outside looking in.

No doubt. Specifically when said Sun Belt team beat one of the yet to be named MAC teams 43-17 last year.

WMU has been getting a LOT of love from everybody during the off season. It's because PJ Fleck is media gold and he's gotten them the top recruiting classes in the MAC since he's been there.
And IMO no projected MAC Champion (like WMU) will be ranked lower than 35 or 40 until conference perception changes.

Fleck is an NIU alum (a good WR in fact) and I had no idea what he was like then, but he appears to be downright psychotic with all these sayings and his public shenanigans. He is very energetic though and seems to be able to fire players up, so I'm not surprised he recruits well. Remains to be seen how good his coaching is. This is the year for WMU if they're going to go anywhere. They were supposed to be pretty good last year but couldn't get past NIU with our backup QB.

Not like a 37-7 loss with -14 yards rushing over the Sun Belt Champ.
#48 Toledo Rockets
Of course they didn't get it right just like last season when the Rockets didn't return any starters on the OL. This year the Defense has losses but the Rockets help fill the spots with 3 and 4 star transfers/graduate transfers. The latest being former Va Tech DB Desmond Frye. Of course the preview doesn't address any of it.
