as he mentioned. appointments are available through the regular and reserve units in the fleet, USMC, etc.
Athletes for instance who are at the Naval Academy Prep School get their appointments through the Naval Reserve or USMC reserve. I should have fact checked this first, but I believe that to still be the case. My experience goes back about 50 years and may be dated........ holy cow.... 50 years????

Good point. I mentioned the enlisted side, but probably didn't emphasize that enough as another means of entering the academies. I don't recall their specific numbers outside of the NAPSters.

NAPS classes are only about 200 people. There might of been 30-40 football players there at the time I was there. Graduates of NAPS that are going to USNA get their appointments from SECNAV.

Thanks. I knew the size of NAPS was roughly in line with what you stated. I just wasn't sure how many enlisted non-NAPSters there typically was per year.

There are about 70 fleet returnees and the rest are students the Academies want but either didn't have the right grades/classes or had a declined appointment/application but was still a desired candidate.

Just finally being in a conf where Navy has divisional battles (just to get to a Conf Championship Game), that's why the Navy/Memphis game finally had so much on the line for Navy (Houston game coming up too), as they noted on TV...Navy generally had a 3 game schedule every year:

Notre Dame
Air Force
Army

as Navy had nothing really to play for (almost guaranteed a bowl game somewhere...usually slotted by agreement).

Navy had a big game against someone not named the above 3?

That's the beauty for Navy in finally being in a conference.

Beating a ranked team Saturday night on prime-time national TV in a big-time atmosphere should boost their recruiting. The continued exposure that they will receive in the AAC will keep them competitive.

RE: Navy is having a special year, what's in store for the future?
I hate the triple option because its scheme is so foreign compared to how FBS football is played by most schools these days. It gives Navy, GT & GA Southern (others?) a real advantage since opponents just don't face that offense & don't defend it well - only seeing it once a year at most. That said, it is a perfect offense for Navy because it doesn't require superior athletic skills so much as superior execution - and while Navy may be a little short on recruiting of the most gifted athletes (the triple option doesn't produce many pro caliber athletes), Navy is very strong at recruiting superior intelligent student athletes conditioned to execute with precision. The triple option is a tremendous equalizer. And until the AAC becomes familiar with how to defend it, Navy will be a force in the AAC.

Also to add to the military academy recruiting discussion, I received a nomination to West Point. I met the academic requirements for admission but would not have received my congressman's appointment (others in my congressional district had higher academic achievement), however, a little known Bobby Knight coached the basketball team at that time & through some process he was able to have enough appointments at his disposal to recruit basketball players who otherwise met the academic standards from a pool who were nominated by congressmen around the country. No doubt Knight had the influence to get me a nomination but the Vietnam War had me choose a different direction. I would have been there at least one year with a student named Krzyzewski who would have been a senior my freshman year. Since I spent some time in the USAF right after graduation, looking back I might have made the decision to go to West Point if I had known that a West Point grad could have transferred to the USAF for the service obligation.

(11-09-2015 04:08 AM)_C2_ Wrote:  It should be obvious that they are not capable of sustaining this. That's not a slight as much as it is a way pointing out what their mission is as an institution.

They'll be dangerous because of the continuity of the coaching staff and the complexity of their offense but to expect them to be ranked or even take the next step and start competing for national titles again is asking a bit much.

"Sustaining" or OP asking about a dropoff or national titles? We aren't really competing for the CFP now, even if we win out including CCG. I will go out on a limb and say that we are capable of sustaining not competing for national titles.
First reason this is a special year is #19. We will have some dropoff to Tago, but he is pretty good, too. And for the Pirate fan projecting their injury to the starter...the current #3 won the Admiral Mack award for most improved player in spring ball. Other losses on offense? We just reload at slotback - we get some great athletes too small for elsewhere. Fastest guy on the team is an underclassman at slot. Fullback? We lost our senior starter last year...current wrecking ball is now starting for the first time as a senior. #2 another senior, but the third 255 pound fast guy is a sophomore. O-line might be biggest loss after Keenan - when healthy, 5 seniors start... but they haven't always been healthy, so the younger guys are getting experience.
The second reason this is a special season is our defense. We are leading the conference in scoring defense in conference games. We came in worried because the only place with experience was the secondary, and we will lose some of those guys, and a couple of the big fellas, but return more on D than we lose.
That's kind of how it goes - we ALWAYS have a lot of junior-senior starters, and we always lose some.
And yet, in 12 seasons from 03 to 14 we won 100 games. 8+ per year. Only one losing season. And while that was not against the Big East we signed up for in 2011 -- I was among those worried about that being a tall order-- those 100 wins WERE against year by year schedules that look a lot like this year's.
Navy should continue to be in the top half of the American, and a factor in division/conference races for the foreseeable future.

As long as they keep that darn good coach, Navy remains a legitimate threat for the AAC CG.

Maine Maritime is CGA's biggest rival so they need the call up to The Red White and Kick Your Ass blue conference also. 04-cheers

Sure! 10 is a good number for a conference. Maybe we can find two more so we have a conference championship game, so we aren't left out like the BIG 12.

(I feel like posting this on the main board for a gag.)

For the record, Navy football players service select Marine Corps at something like twice the percentage of the Brigade at large...

Yes this is a special year and Keenan is without match, but we had a winning record 8 of the 9 seasons before he came to Annapolis. In no small part because the coaching staff has enjoyed remarkable continuity -- we've been able to keep our system intact. I wouldn't bet on us falling off the edge any time soon.

As a Navy fan, I think the ideal situation is to have one of these types of seasons every 3-4 years and be bowling inbetween them. Navy's had a lot of great offenses in the past under QB's like Kaipo and Ricky. But never have they had the defense to go with it. If the staff can leverage the conference and this success in to winning the best defenders looking at service academies, perhaps this could be more of the norm. Just so long as we don't ever have a repeat of the 2007 defense. Woof.
