Do this for a few years and we can see what kind of prognosticators they really are.

OS predictions from here

RPIs from here

The number at the bottom is the mean of obs-calc. So as if we didn't know before, OS preseason conference rankings tell us nothing because the differences between the conferences is way smaller than the error of the predictions.

Interesting chart, thanks for putting that together. Tech by far had the biggest difference between the OS and final RPI (74). Only other team that finished ahead of Marshall and Tech was Boise. Maybe we can make up some ground this year too!

Very interesting. Looks like there was a bias toward the AAC and against CUSA. Naw, never could happen.

Looking at the predictions I think ECU, Tulsa and UConn were pretty fair. I'd probably have predicted Memphis 80-100 too, and that is way off the final RPI. The predictions for UCF, Cinci and Houston were ridiculous.

The CUSA rankings were clearly based only on the 2013 season results, with no attention paid to recruiting and player attrition/retention.

The OS ranked CUSA as follows with the previous season's conference record in parentheses.

Marshall (7-1)
Rice (7-1)
UTSA (6-2)
UNT (6-2)
MTSU (6-2)
WKU (4-3)*
ODU (8-4)**
FAU (4-4)
LT (3-5)
UTEP (1-7)
Southern Miss (1-7)
UAB (1-7)
FIU (1-7)

*Sun Belt record
** Transition year record

Except for ODU their preseason ranking follows the previous season's conference record exactly.

Wow, I had already forgotten just how bad the AAC was last year. Had Memphis not turned it around it would have been down right atrocious.

The avg RPI for the AAC was 90 vs. 75 for C-USA.

Typical AAC response. So enamored with the P5 that the only stat that could possibly matter would involve P5 games. RPI takes the whole universe of college football into account. So, you were saying?

I'm not sure what your point is or what that has to do with my statement.

Clearly, the couple you beat weren't enough to help your RPI.

Agree, it has been a lot of fun over what amounts to nothing. Should be renamed the Seinfeld Thread. Glad real game is almost here.

And we'll be fixing the "beat the P5" tally.

Lets just hope it looks like this after the season...

Nice to see WKU picked first in my Sports Illustrated today, Marshall was picked 3rd, yes very shocking indeed...

All I can see is the gargantuan gap between one half of that list and the other half.

And then when I look closer I see the SEC and then two clusters.
