I think the proximity to campus is a real positive in terms of safety as there have been issues with some of the more distant housing options created in the past couple of years. According to Channel 5's report, there will be a police substation in this complex too.

High past time for this...there were over 400 freshmen living in hotel rooms last year.

That is great news! I was not aware of the freshmen in hotels. Thanks for sharing.

Is that where the McDonalds was located?
I remember a McDonalds on Calhoun when I was a freshman in 1989.

I had completely forgotten that McDonald's on Calhoun but you are correct. More remember Reflections on the corner facing Vine (by that or another name over those years). Those empty, undeveloped lots on that corner weren't exactly a welcoming gateway to the south side of campus.

The other prime spot for development is the old law school location at Calhoun and Clifton and it appears there is some pre-work underway there for demolition though I've read nothing about that site plan. It would be an ideal location for an alumni house/campus visitor center as it's practically across the street from a new hotel rising at Clifton and Straight (opening this fall I believe). That would be perfect for families overnight trips for their kids' campus visits as they could park and stay there and simply walk across Clifton Avenue to West Campus.

Bottom line: UC's physical transformation continues to improve its image as one of the nation's most spectacular, and inviting, urban campuses.

My favorite Burgundy's memory involves a friend of mine who started at UC when he was 17. He found a guy on the 12th floor of Calhoun Hall who made really good fake I.D.'s for $50 (he had a good camera, a laminating machine and official driver's license paper he "acquired" from the DMV.

Anyway, one night we went to Burgundy's, and he accidentally gave the bouncer his real I.D. Instead of just staying away for the night, he quickly said, "Oh wait, I gave you the wrong one." The bouncer didn't let him in and kept his $50 I.D.

RE: Most dangerous campuses (Uh oh, Norwood...)
the missus and i have been in northside since aught nine. five years ago, we moved within the neighborhood. the effect was drastic. it's only a fifteen minute walk into town- as we call it- whereas before we were within earshot of the tavern and junkers. relatively busy side street, little yard with a halfway house along one side creating the atmosphere of a courtyard. i still have section eight neighbors, we're on good terms but we only have one immediate neighbor as nature preserves pervade the quietly tucked away street. we walk on trails thru the woods to reach comet, we walk thru the woods to take the kid to a montessori school. we've tall assed hardwoods in the back forty, enough land to keep me busy. the neighbors don't use their backyard, so i make that mine through stewardship. our location evokes that of rural living. wife joked she be more inclined to move to wisconsin- as is my wont- had we not moved to our current house

as it stands, we went in on a cabin and 10 acres with some wisky friends a few years back. couple hours north of madison inbetween blackriver falls and wisky rapids just north of the familiar rolling hills of the driftless, wisky's hippie region. my preference was for north as wisconsinly possible but the wisky friends wanted a more limited radius being from the big southern cities. they're going to take care of it and all so i said f*ck it. i believe the inshiterator project is being worked on as we speak

urban living suited me quite well for a spell and it still did prior to the move. many friends followed me into the neighborhood and encamped themselves. i prioritize them little these days. possibly ironic is that i was opposed to moving in the first place because i don't care for change once i get into a groove. i didn't want to go thru the hassle. we also at the time hadn't broached the idea. wife walked by it one day on her daily walk thru the woods. she took a longer path this time and saw this house was for sale. i thought it was a pipe dream anyway, considering it was a more than reasonable asking price, coupled with the location and the fact the house didn't require any serious repairs, but.... you never know who was buying and when back in those days.

it'd be tough to leave this house, this neighborhood. it's different type of liberalism is still there, however now it's more mainstream liberalism that one encounters. i don't care about politics anymore, or at least try not to. the people are super. i reckon i'd miss the house more than i'd miss anything else. it's the perfect house for our family. be hard as hell to replicate what we have here; i've a dedicated room for all my books, and me! but i'd do it in a heartbeat for the isolation. convincing the wife is difficult as we visit her greater minster area folks quite often. i think i could convince my mom and sisters. as it stands i think i'm stuck here, and i continue to take it all in
