I have to say, as a guy who grew up on the old Southwest Conference---I do like the way this plan comes really close to effectively resurrecting the Southwest Conference.

Trying to break up the SEC and Big 10 a bit. Florida with the ACC schools in the SE and Georgia Tech with the SEC schools in the South.
Big 10 has the 4 newest members go west, the 3 eastern members go NE with the rest split between midwest and plains.

These alignments make sense, and therefore, this plan is dead in the water.

The transfer stuff they are suggesting sounds pretty clearly an illegal restraint of trade.

"The group includes Devils/Sixers owner David Blitzer, NFL executive Brian Rolapp, Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, Syracuse chancellor Kent Syverud and TurnkeyZRG chairman and CEO Len Perna."

Odds they get a sit down meeting with Sankey or Petitti?

To be sure, these are alignments that the TV networks just said that they didn’t want to pay for (see the Western recreation of the Pac-10) and instead aggregate the best brands into the Big Ten and SEC. So, that’s why it’s dead in the water.

"An 11-page deck, titled 'Competitive Equity Proposals' and dated Feb. 15, was produced for CST by TurnkeyZRG, a search firm that works extensively in college athletics. The document is marked 'attorney-client privileged,' although it is unclear why, since TurnkeyZRG is not a law firm. A representative from CST didn’t respond to an email seeking comment on the details."

"Hey, look at this important 'attorney-client' priveleged document that showed up unannounced in my e-mail. It must be a big deal, right? We should do a story about it!"

The under league is a sick torture. You play a national schedule, east coast to west coast against a revolving door of unpopular teams. At the end of your globetrotting you either stay in hell or get relegated to an even worse hell.

Still an upgrade for New Mexico State :)

As a Rice fan I see that it is woefully short of the SWC.

With her expertise on revolving doors, Judy would be an ideal commissioner for the Under Water League

I would rather play the horizontal schedule than the vertical one.

I disagree with this take - this looks like the NFL, NBA or MLB. Networks seem to like regional model for those leagues just fine.

Sportico appears to be stuck in 1990. The West is mostly just the old Pac (all 10 were in the Pac until the bitter end), the SW is mostly the SWC (all 10 were in the SWC at some point) and the South is all original SEC members with only GT not still in the SEC).

Allow me to propose an alternative:

SEC: current 16 + Clemson, FSU
B1G: current 18
Big 12: current 16
ACC: Current membership + USF

Mine is easy and requires just 3 simple and eminently realistic moves. Theirs requires a time machine and a European soccer-style pro/rel setup.

They already tried once and Phillips was the only P4 Commissioner who would talk to them. This is a solid move by Phillips to change the conversation if you ask me, especially considering his very limited options, but I don't think it will go anywhere.

Huh? Those leagues haven’t had a regional model in 50+ years. They were all at one point regional, and then went to a national model by relocating franchises from east to west and expanding throughout the country. That happened in the 70s, 60s, 50s, even as far back as the 40s.

The pro leagues have 30-32 teams each optimized with the best markets and brand names. The P2 now have 34 teams. If the networks didn’t want to pay for the Pac-12 before, they don’t want to pay for it in some larger amalgamation. Getting USC, Oregon and Washington together with Ohio State and Michigan along with Texas and Oklahoma together with Alabama and Georgia was the whole point. The proposal was basically a wish fulfillment to go back to nostalgic circa 1990 alignments. That’s great and all, but let’s not pretend that the actual people that matter - the Big Ten and SEC - spent more than 2 seconds looking at this proposal before firing it into the sun.
