A drop box is no different than a postal box. In fact, it's likely more secure as many states require video surveillance of them.

And what's dropped in the box is the same. It's usually an outer envelope with an inner envelope that contains the ballot. There's a signature in most all states on that inner envelope that gets matched. Most states only send to those registered...so they know they are citizens...and then they track which ones come back.

If someone tries to steal your ballot or cast another one in your stead, the state either sees they have two when they process them or a voter will call and get another ballot...then the gig is up that someone is trying to commit fraud. So the state would know to toss out the bad ballot and only count the legit one.

Now that's not to say that some illegal votes will make it in. Of course, you can never make it completely free of fraud. And I also would like a federal standard as far as requiring signatures and making you request ballots rather than states just mailing them out. I'm also completely in favor of picture ID being requied for voting in person, but our elections have always been run by the states...it's hard to take that away from them now.
