1) turn down an NIT invite this year ==> not eligible for NIT or NCAA bid next year.
2) turn down CIT or CBI this year ==> not eligible for any tournament next year.
3) same deal for players that opt not to play for their current invited school because they plan to use the portal to a different school next year.

think about it: Memphis turned down the NIT this year. even if they have a good season next year, they wouldn't be allowed to go to the NIT or NCAAs - but would get invited to the CBI or CIT. They have to play in the CBI or CIT - or there is no postseason at all in year 3.

the fact that schools like Toledo and EKU etc won their conference regular season championship and aren't going anywhere is unacceptable - maybe more so if their school turned the opportunity down.

my alma mater turning down an NIT invite is ridiculous - I'll forego my alumni donations this year
That seems like a great way to have a school in financial trouble lose their entire roster to the portal. CBI and CIT are pay to play, keep in mind.

Yes, they are pay to play, so the idea there is to force schools to pay money to play in a post-season pay-to-play tournament to solve the problem that ...

... well, it's not clear what problem that it is solving.

I don't see any reason to force the schools to line the pockets of the companies organizing the post-season pay to play basketball tournaments.

Maybe there isn't enough to talk about with the NCAA tournament, so students at mid-major schools should pay higher activity fees because random internet commentators are entitled to having more games to talk about on the internet? Is that it?

For teams like Chicago State, where there is a clear benefit to them of playing in CBI or CIT, it's a good thing that the tournaments exist. But it doesn't make much sense to suggest that the NCAA should put the squeeze on schools to force schools to participate in pay to play tournaments.

Next up for the Cougars in the CBI Quarterfinals- either 7 seed Fairfield 22-12, or 10 seed Little Rock 21-12.

And it will be the Cougars versus Fairfield 23-12 in the quarter finals. Fairfield was the MAAC regular season runner up by one game and lost in the MAAC championship game.

With Chicago States short bench, having a days rest is a plus. Fairfield is playing on back to back days.

Monday CBI Quarterfinal Lineup

Cleveland State versus High Point 11:00 AM
Arkansas State versus Montana 1:00 PM
Chicago State versus Fairfield 3:30 PM
Evansville versus Seattle 5:30 PM

All games at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach. Definitely a nice event, having all games in one desirable, easy to reach location. Good for fans. Easy for teams. No multiple rounds of making last minute travel plans on the fly.

In a game that came down to the final seconds, Fairfield moved past Chicago State 77-74 and improved to 24-12. Chicago States season ended at 13-19. Fairfield missed a free throw with a couple seconds remaining but Chicago was out of timeouts and could not do anything with the rebound and time expired.

The Cougars could not contain the Stags top scorer as Caleb Fields went for 32 on 13/20 shooting, including 6 of 13 for 3.

Wesley Cardet heated up with 17 second half points for the Cougars but it was not quite enough.

Fairfield will meet the winner of Seattle U versus Evansville.
