It’s a proposal to elevate everybody. The P2 thinks we need them to stay alive, without easy wins on the schedule you will have a lot of unhappy fans with bloated season ticket prices being a perennial 2-3 win team. It should not have been allowed to get to this point, but here we are.

THis will also prompt a lot of coach firings by boosters disapointed that they can't compete anymore and players will be jumping in the portal before every bowl game to get on a better team. It'll be hilarious.
Mo money, mo problems.

well this stupidity ain't happening and so it's utterly meaningless. G5 isn't gonna cut their nose to spite their face. They just aren't.

Depends.

All of these issues are reasonably foreseeable, but you still see schools trying to move up to FBS and/or Division I despite all of this.

Also, a lot of schools (even at Division I) see athletics as important student recruitment tools for both the general student population and/or specific underrepresented groups that athletics help.

I'm sure that's how it's been in the past. Just wonder if that will continue to be the case in the future. That is, will athletics continue to be an advertisement for the university if the university can no longer afford it.

As it becomes a thing that fewer Universities can afford, we will surely see some Universities participating in higher level athletics than they can reasonably afford in order to project an image of being in better financial condition than they really are.

Still trying to figure out the logic of trying to stop someone from dropping you by dropping them first...

except its not. And no, not all g5 would be that ******* stupid to stop playing the Big Ten and SEC. I'd venture a guess most wouldn't- and frankly a high majority. ACC and Big 12 can't play everyone they'd need to play.

Can pretty much guarantee you no AAC or MWC team would do it. And guess what, that SOS boost would help them get in over any of the other G5 teams into the playoffs. Brilliant.

SOS doesn't matter anymore now that Liberty got in with their schedule.

Right now, it's not happening. However, if the P5 continue taking all the money and exposure, what's in it for G5s? Are they going to use that extra money to pay more for buy games? I'm pretty sure the networks won't go for more buy games, so that's probably off the table. It would be good to at least be prepared rather than caught scrambling.

Yeah, that bullet will bounce off and drop right into the P2's beer as they all laugh.

Those buy games for the G5 help fund their athletic departments.

And also, he was talking about having the G5 just freeze out the Big Ten and SEC. lol, that's funny.

I also suggested that the ACC and Big12 pick up the slack, meaning pay the G5 schools the same as if you visited the P2. I fail to see the loss of money accept possibly on the side of the ACC and Big12.

ACC and Big 12 don't have enough slots to be able to do that. They just don't.

Like I also suggested, they'd need to drop the FCS game. The ACC and B12 just absorbed 7 new members, I think they'd come pretty close.

Virginia Tech is not afraid to play at a G5 and to be honest that is far more appreciated than always playing AT an P2 stadium. I'll take a home and home with VPI over playing a one and done against Ohiuh State. So if the Non P2 schools want to flex some muscle and influence the G5, they have the balls to do it.

Yeah that is few and far between. Not seeing Clemson or schools like that going and playing at Georgia Southern. Just aren't.

Clemson and FSU are doubtful as they already have to suffer BC, Duke and Wake. But lot's of other ACC schools regularly do this, I can't speak for the Big12, I doubt the recent G5 call ups have such a lofty opinion of themselves.

RE: Pushback idea G5 refuses to play P2 teams
Usually do--but have not read the thread.

IMO--G5 should continue to play P4...

Just start (as a group) raising the price on "money games" slowly--BUT significantly.

Look at the increase in Media(for most) and CFP (for all) the P4.

An extra Million or .5M won't even be missed. These games need to be pushed toward the 2.9M mark over the next few years. Some are already at 2M.

It's the "risk" G5 Have to take to Survive on their budgets. The money has to come from somewhere.

RE: Pushback idea G5 refuses to play P2 teams
Cut out the G5 and that can hurt P4/2/whatever schools as well in other ways that aren't readily apparent.

Take in my case SEC member Tennessee in Knoxville.

UT averages 7 home games a year, occasionally 8 if they negotiate a home and home with a team from a Power conference. Of those 7, 3 of them are either G5, or a combination of G5 and a token regional FCS team thrown in.

Cut out the G5 and FCS, that pretty much limits you to 6 home games a year. A team like Tennessee can dictate terms when it comes to the Central Michigans or Bowling Greens or Toledos of the world. There's no way that would work with Michigan State, Ohio State, or Louisville. Those teams would demand nothing less then a home and home arrangement, or at the very least a high profile matchup at a neutral site.

Cut the number of annual home games, that can also be damaging to the area around a school. In 2021 and 2022, a home game at UT saw a roughly $42 million boost in revenue in Knoxville area businesses on the Friday and weekend of a Tennessee home game. There are some businesses close to the UT campus that treat home games like retail businesses handle the Friday after Thanksgiving. From what I've seen of a few other towns and cities that are home to a major Power 4/2/whatever university, it's probably pretty similar elsewhere.

Knoxville is a major urban center with a lot going for it even without UT football and basketball though. It's also pretty close to a lot of other regional tourist attractions. One less football game to deal with would probably be appealing for a lot of folks that like going to the Knoxville area but that aren't big sports or UT fans.

Auburn, Alabama, or Starkville or Oxford in Mississippi, smaller towns that aren't close to some other high profile tourist spots, could really take a major hit if those teams don't play G5 teams and see 1 less home game on the schedule as a result of only playing other power programs.

Same with basketball. Cut out the mid majors, yeah, that might boost the strength of your schedule a bit. But that will result in either less games during the non conference portion of your season, or result in turning 2 or 3 less home games while also having to travel more. Using Tennessee again, Rick Barnes averages roughly 6 non conference games a season against Mid Major level schools that are always UT home games. Cut out SoCon and Ohio Valley and Sun Belt or other mid major conferences, UT will probably still have a full schedule, but you'd be looking at 2, possibly 3 guaranteed home game spots turn into road games.
