RE: Breaking: Shawn Elliot Leaving Ga State
I don’t know why y’all are arguing.
Obviously, Ga State is unlike most universities in this country. Even among URBAN universities, we’re pretty unique.
It’s the old adage. You can be the juiciest, sweetest, ripest apple on the tree. But some people just are never going to like apples.
And, most importantly, it’s THEIR problem they’re mad because you aren’t a tuna sandwich

Why is GA St unique? It’s a university that serves a need for various degrees in a large city. Congrats.

Thanks, it IS pretty unique being one of four Tier 1 universities in Georgia that dedicates $250mil research budget per year. Finally some proper recognition!

One of four in one state doesn’t make it unique by definition. Congrats on what you have, but let’s not pretend it’s differentiated itself from other urban centers of learning.

Actually.. being one of four among ~30 institutions under the University System of Georgia is unique. Why? I know for a fact that it's USG's mission to have the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Augusta University emphasize distinctive areas of expertise at the level of "academic achievements that impart national or international status." (that's not my interpretation, but rather USG's own mission statement for their Tier 1 universities.)
Georgia Tech has the excellent engineering programs. Augusta has the highly selective medical program. UGA boasts their biological sciences and related fields. Georgia State has the public policy, law, and business programs, alongside STEM studies (most notably researching infectious diseases in conjunction with the CDC.)
USG gave these four universities their own purpose to cover most area of expertise that Georgia residents can study at the highest level without leaving our border. I've been told from someone lobbying for an outside interest that it'll be quite difficult to convince the board and the state politicians that Georgia will ever need another in-state university with $1+ billion annual funding. I heard Georgia State was little lucky to join "the club" when it did, as GSU university leaders strategically planned Georgia State to be tier 1 research institution back in the 90s.

"You can't seriously think GSU's situation can be compared to other urban universities!"
Um, okay, I guess we're unique.
"Unique? You're just like every other urban university!"
Having studied bio at GSU, I have to wonder...how many BSL-4 labs are at those other schools? What about in the entire United States? Must be a lot of them if we're just like them...?
Of course, pretty soon we're gonna need to flip back to being different and worse than other urban schools. Y'all let me know when that's the story again.

Your concerns are dully noted. Your okay with the current university system in Georgia or your not. When you compare Georgia with the 5 or 6 states in the south east you'll see a glaring malfeasance. Enjoy the ride and your new very nice arena. GS will go forward with $60 million from the state TO ADD 1,200 SEATS.

Did you mean for that to be in reply to me? I seriously can't tell if you're taking issue with anything I said or not. If this is about GS getting greater academic support from the USG, yeah, I'd love to see that too. GSU doesn't have to give up its BSL-4 research for that to happen.
