That’s not a good reflection on the job in Mobile.

If someone came to your job and said "we'll pay you 2-3x as much and you'd have less responsibilities" you'd be a fool not to accept, no?

Wommack is probably not taking his chances with the Jags next season after a dud of a season in 23. This is probably good for USA in the long run.

Ah dang... that stinks... especially that it reopens the portal for your guys

Cold comfort...but...that's a complement for the whole program being nabbed by Bama

Facts. BUT, you don't see G5 head coaches take DC positions often.

It is the most prized DC job in the country though so I get it.

Going from being paid $810K to making $2M is a reflection on basic economics. It is called reality.

Wait, Wommack is going to more than double his income and improve his chances of stepping into a premier P5 job in the near future and you're shocked? Holy crap some of you are living in an altered state of reality. Sucks for South Alabama but let's get real here.

Other SBC coaches have turned down similar offers. Being a HC is important, there are only so many of those positions.

Alabama DC is probably “better” on the resume than South Alabama (or even Troy) HC for getting an upper tier P4 HC job in the future. I mean they’ve sent guys to Georgia, Ole Miss, and Texas just to name 3. This is the new divide in collegiate athletics.

In his circumstance, he made the right call. Three straight losses to Troy. Dude was probably going to get fired after the 2024 season anyway.

Almost happened a couple years ago. Blake Anderson was fully prepared to leave AState to take an OC job, but Utah State offered a head coach job last minute and he managed to use that route.

RE: Wommack to Bama as DC
Basic reality:

Wommack wins at South Alabama, and gets a P5 job, he's probably going to a P5 school that's struggled to win recently, making his goal of winning a title far harder to pull. He goes to Alabama, they win a NC using a strong defense, he probably gets a P5 offer, and its probably a better P5 offer than he would have gotten by winning 10 at South and playing in the Birmingham Bowl.

Yes there are examples of coaches leaving SBC schools and doing well. Gus Malazhn left AState for Auburn and played for a National title the next year, but he won an NC there as an OC before that. Eli Drinkwitz left App for Mizzou, and they won a NY6 bowl this year, but it took years of building a historically struggling school to do it, and they still didn't smith the Playoff.

Its more money, less responsibility, and easy enough that if he gets the HC itch again, he can go to anywhere he wants.

Name one please. I can't recall any SBC head coach turning down a $1.2 million raise.
