Yep. Dilfer has been made out to be a villain since the hire nationally. No one wants to see him succeed. I believe that will fuel him.

I just don’t understand any frustration behind it. What’s he supposed to do? Pat him on the head and tell him it’ll be okay? Poor decisions have consequences in your work life. It’s nothing personal against the coordinator, strictly business.

I'm a fan of the response. An unacceptable error he was rightfully upset about. It looked like Dilfer took it up a notch after Gilstrap talked back to him.

I’m a fan of the response. I’m all in on Dilfer after seeing our dramatic improvement knowing we have walkons starting. No longer thinking a bowl this year, prob 4-5 wins.

I believe Reeves may have regressed under Vincent as Clark wasn’t helping game plan, but Reeves was also calling plays his whole career here, so there’s that. Mix that with Dilfer and Patrick’s help in recruiting and we would’ve been in good shape defensively.
I can appreciate Dilfer blowing up on a coach, after not seeing one bit of emotion from the previous head coach on the sidelines. Not even in the most embarrassing losses.
Also, if 28 points a game with Vincent calling plays couldn’t cut it in our most important games with a decent defense. We’ve got to muster up more than 21, 21, 23 with a paper thin margin for error defense.
We knew we had to replace 4 starters on OLine and we blew it in recruiting to do just that. So, you don’t just get a pass on that.
True freshman don’t normally make effective OL starters.

A new staff made early mistakes, shocking.

You are probably dead-on.......we can still get to six but will have to get a split with Memphis and South Florida. We can beat the others, as long as we keep improving. The offense will be unstoppable if they can get the running game going. The passing game is already playing at a high level.

But maybe they will as Sophomores….given the experience. Delayed gratification is still gratification. None of this is wasted. We are building something.

I agree with the strategy. Relying on JUCO players is one of the reasons why we have such holes. Building through high school players leads to stability in the long run. Getting a couple a year is fine to fill holes. Relying on them on a consistent basis will eventually blow up in your face

The same people complaining or hating on Dilfer are the same ones praising Saban for being animated on the sidelines because he got his fire back.
Again difference must be that Saban is a winning coach and Dilfer is a coach people want to fail - and so far is 1-4.

Having 12 men on the field is inexcusable. We lost the ball as Tulane was given a first down. The timing sucked! If Dilfer has lost trust in the ST coach, it’s time to fire him. If trust is still there, I guess you hang in there with him, but you shorten the leash.

RE: Maybe I’m on a limb here….
Luckily, Quinn appears to be healing and back to his old self. But beyond that, our third phase is abhorrent:
- No touchback power on kickoffs
- Because of that and poor scheme, teams rip off nice returns to at least the 35
- Poor return decisions put us deep in our own territory
Punting and punt coverage does appear to be good, however. The Arkansas transfer is doing a nice job.

RE: Maybe I’m on a limb here….
I’m late to the party on this thread but other than specials teams it’s comical to suggest staff changes at this point. We all knew we had a horrible beginning slate. In all honestly the only thing that probably should have happened would be winning 1 of GSU or UL game. Or atleast not performing how we did against LU. We are all pissed because we had a shot to beat a Tulane team that was a 21.5 point favorite and blew it. I’m seeing progress and that’s what should matter. Brand new staff that had only a hand full of months to get settled in before the season started. Now if we are sitting 1-7 then that’s an issue. This is likely a transformation season that should yield a great season next year. Bill Clark spoiled us with solid bowl seasons but no big WOW wins (outside of BYU). In the si season alone we’ve looked better at Georgia and Tulane than we ever did against the big favorites/money games.

RE: Maybe I’m on a limb here….
I'm impressed all the way around. I loved his response on the field. Loved the passion, and loved what it means in the larger picture. Case in point: right now, through 5 games, we have a season total of 161 penalty yards. A year ago at the same point, that number was 288. Through 5 games during Clark's last year, we had 418 penalty yards. Attention to detail, and chewing ass when others aren't, will pay dividends. I'd grown tired of the "aw shucks" response to stuff like 12 men on the field, so I found Dilfer's response a breath of fresh air.
And then I will say I'm also impressed with his response above. Leadership looks like a lot of things. Sometimes it looks like an ass chewing. Sometimes it looks like the statement he made later, being disappointed in his own response in the heat of the moment. As I've told some others, I don't like being 1-4, but I see a lot of things I like. I believe we're headed in the right direction. And I don't think firing an assistant coach 5 games into his job is a sensible response. You hold people accountable, chew their ass when they've mucked it up, and give them an opportunity to respond and get better.
