If I read things right, the schools of the Big 12 (or ACC, whichever conference becomes the "fall-man" for the P4) would be gaining much more money from wiping out the Pac than whatever they'd lose by reducing their conference share. Taking the Big 12 as an example, instead of each school getting 1/16 of 1/5 (1.25%) of the P5 CFP payout, they'd each be getting 1/18 of 1/4 (1.39%) of the P4 CFP payout, an 11% increase.

Although at that point, the P4 are likely to vote to change the power conference distribution to a per-school basis rather than a per-conference basis. But even then, with the P4 at 18, 18, 17+ND, and 16, the difference for 2024 and 2025 is negligible.

Of course, other conference distributions would be reduced by having more members, such as the media deal payout, unless the media partners pony up some extra dough for two pro rata adds.

I wonder just how ironclad the CFP bylaws are, that the Pac would retain veto power over any changes. If OSU and WSU overplay their hand, maybe the CFP dissolves and re-forms, and the Pac is cut out of the nCFP entirely. Which would be ironic considering the Pac's transition from PCC to AAWU.

They already have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Per a Big 12 podcast I heard, it is done by team for every A5 confetence except for the Pac 12. That actually opens the door for OSU & WSU, and it's really scaring the departing teams, IMO.

It's either done by team for all or by conference for all. Not really room for middle ground there.

Tell that to the guy who made the video that's featured on this first post of this thread link I'm about to give you:

I expect the powers that be to restructure this ASAP. Why? Because money is a priority and a very emotional issue. The Pac-12 legal fights are only beginning.

They have no ability to restructure it until 2026 unless all 11 voting members agree. There is no provision for voting somebody off the island. Unless you think that the CFP can just do what they want instead of following their own rules.

Well, it's not like we've seen the contract.

If the PAC-2 isn't an FBS conference next year, do they keep their CFP revenue? their seats on the CFP boards? Maybe not. Sankey did say that the CFP is not the NCAA.

Contracts run two ways. It's not hard to make the case that a 2 team PAC isn't holding up their end of the deal.

Look at Hancock's statements from the other day. They're afraid to do anything to upset the apple cart of the extra 2 years worth of a 12 team playoff. If that means doing nothing on the Pac for now, they're fine with that. If that means treating the Broke Pac Mountain like the Pac 12 for 2 years, they're fine with that. If that means including OSU and WSU as "power" schools in the next CFP contract for 2026, I'll bet they'd even be fine with THAT. Just please don't screw us out of all that extra money for 2024 and 2025! Heck, the way the 2Pac and Fresno St are playing this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see WSU in the playoff, OSU in the Rose Bowl, and Fresno in the Fiesta Bowl. How do you demote a conference like that? They might just play their way into a big CFP payday post-2025, and decent contract with ESPN, too.

They might but the won’t do it with just Pacific and Mountain time zone teams…. Fresno, SDSU, Tulane, Memphis and Boise need to join the PAC-2 in a central to Pacific conference. Whether it extends further east as a 24 team Promotion relegation model or an 18 team fixed model it needs to happen.

Big Ten-18
SEC-16
Big 12 - 16
ACC - 17
ND - 1

Total - 68

I guess maybe people are still counting Wash St and Ore St until the PAC is officially dead as a power conference. But that's just a temporary thing. Going forward the number is 68, I believe.

Oregon State and Washington State + if it is 12 MWC and North Dakota State and South Dakota State would make it 84.
